If you want to be near the action, base yourself in Cabo Branco or Tambaú, where you’ll find high-rise hotels lining the sand. Cabo Branco sits closest to the easternmost point of the Americas and the area’s reef pools, while Tambaú offers easy access to restaurants and beachside strolls. For a quieter stretch of coast, head north to Bessa.
Beach life
Many trips to Joao Pessoa focus on the beach — and you can see why. With over 20 kilometres of pristine coastline, it’s not always clear where one beach ends and another begins. Cabo Branco is a local favourite for its shallow turquoise waters that give way to a wide sandy shore. Hit the boardwalk kiosks for a midday snack.
Colourful streets
One of Brazil’s oldest cities, Joao Pessoa wears its history proudly in the Centro Historico, where pastel facades line cobbled streets and stately colonial-era buildings still anchor the grid. The standout is the São Francisco Cultural Center, a restored Baroque complex of church and convent known for its ornate stonework, gilded details and brilliant frescoes.

Things to do in Joao Pessoa
Family friendly
Take a catamaran from Tambaú or Seixas Beach to the offshore reefs, where shallow natural pools form at low tide and calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Back on land, climb up to Ponta do Seixas and visit its striking white lighthouse — designed to resemble an agave plant — for wide-open coastal views.

Restaurants in Joao Pessoa serve cuisines from all over the world. But for authentic Brazilian eats, head to Parque Cabo Branco. Enjoy a hot plate of ‘feijoada’ (black bean stew) or grab a ‘pastel’ (a thin, crispy pasty) to go while you explore this permanent food market. For drinks and classic bar food, visit Tambaú Beach’s promenade.
Free things to do
For local crafts, head to the fantastic Mercado de Artesanato Paraibano (MAP), where dozens of stalls sell handwoven textiles, lacework and carved wooden pieces. Live music performances take place several days a week. For a break from the city, visit Jardim Botânico Benjamin Maranhão, a protected Atlantic Forest reserve offering free guided tours throughout the week.
