Your guide to Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar highlights
Where to stay
Base yourself near Jayadev Vihar or Saheed Nagar for easy access to restaurants and shops. If you’d prefer to be close to the temples, consider staying in the Old Town near Lingaraj — just be aware that hotel options are more limited here. Travelling with your family? Check out Patia, a quiet residential area.
Sacred temples
Bhubaneswar is known as the ‘Temple City of India’, and nowhere is that clearer than in its Old Town. The 11th-century Lingaraj Temple is the most important — non-Hindus can view it from a nearby platform. And tenth-century Mukteshwar Temple is known for its intricate carvings. Many temples are active places of worship, so remember to dress modestly.
Ancient caves
Just outside the city centre, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves reveal a network of second-century BC rock-cut retreats once used by Jain monks. Explore meditation chambers, carved facades and ancient inscriptions as you follow terraced paths between the hills. A visit to Bhubaneswar often includes a stop here, where history and open-air viewpoints make the climb worthwhile.

Things to do in Bhubaneswar
Take in the culture
Temples may steal the show, but there’s plenty more culture to enjoy at the museums in Bhubaneswar. Head to the Odisha State Museum for a wide variety of exhibits, including art, natural history, geology and anthropology. To learn more about local traditions, visit the Kala Bhoomi Odisha Crafts Museum or spend an afternoon at the Odisha State Tribal Museum.
Places to eat
Odia restaurants in Bhubaneswar typically serve rice-based meals, lightly spiced vegetable curries and seafood brought in fresh from the coast. But don’t miss sampling the city’s street food staples. ‘Dalma’ (lentils cooked with vegetables) is a favourite here, as is ‘dahibara aloodum’, fried lentil dumplings with tangy yoghurt and spicy curry. For something sweet, try ‘chhena poda’, a caramelised baked cheesecake.
Beaches
While Bhubaneswar itself isn’t on the coast, it’s an easy drive to Odisha’s beaches. Puri is the most popular, with wide sandy stretches and the Shree Jagannath Temple nearby. For a quieter day out, head to Chandrabhaga Beach, where fewer visitors and calmer waves make it ideal for a morning stroll or a sunset view over the Bay of Bengal.
