      FAQs about visiting Estonia

The medieval capital city of Tallinn is a great home base for your Estonian adventures, especially for first-timers. For a more laid-back vibe, head to the island of Saaremaa, known for its windmills, relaxing spas and scenic cycling routes.
Estonia has the same modern, reliable infrastructure as its Nordic neighbours but generally lower prices, making it a great value destination. Getting around is affordable, and many cultural or outdoor experiences are cheap or free.
Summer is for island hopping and beach lounging in Pärnu, though prices trend higher and crowds are heavier. Spring and autumn mean fewer visitors and plenty of crisp, fresh air. Winter is a magical time to bundle up and visit Tallinn’s Christmas markets.
With low crime rates and a welcoming atmosphere for solo and female travellers, Estonia is one of Europe’s safest countries to visit. Take standard precautions against petty theft when passing through crowded areas and transit stations.
Estonians mostly speak Estonian, though Russian is also widely spoken. More than half the population is fluent in English. You don’t need to speak Estonian to get by, but learning a few basic words like ‘tere’ (hello) and ‘tänan’ (thank you) is a nice gesture.
Estonia uses the euro (€). ATMs are widely available in cities and towns, and most businesses accept major credit cards. Tipping isn’t required, but a 10% gratuity at restaurants is appreciated. VAT refunds are available for non-EU residents on purchases over €38.
