Holidays to Lapland aren’t just for Christmas, though there are plenty of sleigh rides with Santa and his reindeer if you want them. But beyond the busy, tinseled months of November and December, you’ll find a wildly beautiful region of storybook forests, pristine lakes and deep-rooted traditions. With the Northern Lights in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer, a visit to Finland’s Arctic region is always a bright idea.

      FAQs about Lapland holidays

Base yourself in Rovaniemi for easy access to Santa Claus Village. For snow sports, hit the large resort of Levi. Or find ultimate seclusion in Saariselkä, located deep in Finnish Lapland.
You’ll want to spend at least four days in Lapland to combine a few excursions, such as husky safaris, Northern Lights tours and visits to Santa’s Village. If you’d like a little more time exploring Rovaniemi or to take a multi-day tour, consider extending your trip to a week.
Head to Lapland in the high season from December to April for skiing, visits to Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi and the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Prefer fewer crowds? From late May until early August, Lapland’s Midnight Sun and near-constant daylight offer great conditions for hiking, fishing and days at the beach.
Lapland is very safe to visit, but because of its Arctic conditions, you should take certain precautions. Roads can be slippery, so be careful when driving and ensure you’ve got snow tyres fitted when needed. Winter temperatures near the Arctic Circle can be severe, so pack appropriately for the freezing weather.
Finnish is most commonly spoken in Lapland, but several Sámi languages are also used by the local Indigenous population. You’ll likely hear some English in the main tourist areas, though it’s nice to know a few Finnish words like ‘hei’ (hello) and ‘kiitos’ (thank you) when interacting with the locals.
Load up on euros (€) for your holiday to Lapland. You’ll find banks and currency exchanges in all major towns and resorts, along with ATMs. Consider exchanging money before visiting remote areas. Tipping is not expected but always appreciated.
