Traditional inn with good cuisine and fine wines
The family-run traditional Gasthof Sagritzerwirt is situated in a panoramic and quiet location, right next to the worth seeing parish church of St. Georg, slightly elevated above the Upper Mölltal valley in the village of Sagritz, just a few minutes away from the Grossglockner federal road not far from Heiligenblut. Therefore, it is also suitable for a break on a Großglockner road trip. Because the Sagritzerwirt is something of an insider tip, large buses hardly ever find their way up the narrow village road.
Traditional, home-style Carinthian country cuisine is offered, from meat doughnuts and casnoodles to delicacies such as Beiried (= rump steak) from Mölltaler Almrind and seasonal game dishes. The latter in particular are recommended. Because boss Gerard, who is now in 3. Generation leads, is himself a hunter and provides corresponding supplies from his own territory. During our visit we enjoyed a fine roast deer, buttery braised, and with a more than sufficient portion size.
Particular praise, and pleasantly surprising at a village inn in the mountains, deserves the small but fine and knowledgeable selection of Austrian bottled wines and the table culture with which wine is served. We chose a strong merlot from Burgenland, which harmonised perfectly with the game dish.
The service is nimble and friendly, and all family members are involved. A typical family business. In fine weather there is a large terrace with wonderful mountain views, the guest rooms inside are comfortably decorated in Alpine style. The price level is moderate and absolutely reasonable, even under 15 euros you will find tasty main courses.
The Sagritzerwirt also has guest rooms to stay in (not tested by us), the whole house looks very well maintained and tastefully decorated.
CONCLUSION: A beautiful country inn to eat and enjoy, that's where we'll definitely go again. Unrestrictedly recommended!
