Gorgeous Hotel/Guesthouse in a Perfect Location!

We stayed here for one night during a whistle-stop visit to Brussels. The room itself was beautifully decorated to a very high standard and had lovely details such as a Nespresso coffee machine and some gorgeous 'Acqua di Parma' toiletries. We had the 'Warega' Room which was huge and overlooked the square below. We could not fault the room and will definitely stay again next time we visit Brussels. Bear in mind that this is more of a guesthouse, as opposed to a traditional hotel, but that was not a problem for us. The rooms are situated above a restaurant called 'Aux Vieux Saint Martin' which has wonderful food and is well worth a visit (try the 'Filet Américain). The hotel is perfectly located in a beautiful square with lots of cafes, restaurants and most importantly chocolate shops!! You can walk from Brussels Midi Station in about 20mins and to the Grand-Place in about 10 mins. I would definitely recommend this hotel for its' great price, location and the bright, modern decor.

Awful experience

I left a review on Google and got the following response from the owner.
"Dear Mr Boddy,
Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry your experience didn’t meet your expectations, though it differs greatly from the majority of our guests who rate us 10/10.
My response: if the majority of your guests rate you ast 10/10, why is your rating on Google 3.9/5 and on Trip Advisor 3.2/5. I am not sure you are correct with your view of how your guests rate you!
Noise: The building is historic, and while some sound can travel, most guests find the rooms quiet. We were not contacted during your stay—had you informed us, we would have gladly helped.
My response: There is one room above the other two. So the people in the room above will have no issue. The people in the room below will not be able to sleep. That is fairly clear, isn't it? You say "If I had informed you about the issue"....well, there is nobody at the property so how do I inform you? By email at 11pm in the evening? Interesting idea!
Access: The entrance remains clear at all times. The restaurant terrace never blocks guest access.
My response: I now wish I had taken photos but, for anyone passing by this property, they will see the entrance is constantly blocked. And, in fact, despite us suggesting to the restaurant that they do not seat people at tables blocking the entrance, they continued to do so!
Host interaction: We are known for our warm welcome. Your comment is inconsistent with the many positive reviews we receive.
My response: Warm welcome? By who? There is nobody there. It was only because we went into the restaurant that we were able to discover the place even existed.
We regret that your experience was not positive, but it does not reflect the reality of most of our guests’ stays

I chose this place for its location and charm. In this I was pleased. The room was beautiful, spacious, clean and well soundproofed. The impeccable and comfortable bedding. I would have liked to have had more than two capsules of coffee and two tea bags for 4 nights of stay for 636€. Finally I would not have come if mention had been made that the 3rd floor was WITHOUT elevator.
The sound insulation is medium, you can hear all the steps of the rooms next door. The stairs are quite inconvenient, but okay it's an old house. I have two knee replacements, and luckily a friend helped me pack my suitcase. So this Award for 4 days without direct service, no cleaning, a 3rd without elevator and a minimum of small gifts seems exaggerated.

Uncomfortable

The location is very good because it is very central and close to the Central Train Station. The rest is not so good:
After climbing 3 flights of stairs there is still a 4th flight inside the room. The apartment has an attic and is covered by wooden crossbars at a height of 140-170 cm, so you cannot walk straight all the time. On the advertisement page there is a shower tray with a screen... the reality of the Songye room is that there is a bathtub with a fixture to hang the shower head on the edge of the bathtub, and it cannot be placed above your head because the water is cut off, which on the other hand also has to be below 170 cm (there is another roof above the bathtub), there is no screen either. It is quite hot (although in Brussels it is 20º), which cannot be eliminated with a mini fan.

Do not give these people a deposit ,your money will never return in your account

DO NOT STAY THERE ! These people will ask for a 250€ deposit as a guarantee promising you to refund it within 48 hours (which already sounds sketchy to begin with considering the room itself only costs about 150€ per night ) . However not only will they take more than an entire week to refund it , it will also most likely not be fully refunded (in my case only 150€ was refunded) even though nothing was broken!!! They simply provided me with dirty bedsheet pictures to somehow justify stealing 100€ of my money . To my knowledge no cleaning product or service costs 100€ and I offered to pay for the cleaning fee if they provided me with a proof of payment however they didn’t even have the decency to accept that or to answer my message . I contacted Booking.com customer support who tried reasoning with them . Booking was sent the same dirty bedsheets pictures by the property and had to apologise to me on behalf of Les Chambres de Martin acknowledging just how ridiculous their justification for stealing 100€ was . Pure theft .
