JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro — Solid Start to a Great Trip

We used this as our first stop on a South America trip, four nights before heading to Iguazú Falls. Good choice.
Check-in was smooth and efficient. As a Titanium member with Marriott, we were set up in a lounge suite on the 17th floor. No ocean view initially, just the interior courtyard, which was a little disappointing given the location. That Saturday though they upgraded us to an ocean view suite on the second floor. Floor two sounds low but honestly the view of Copacabana Beach was still great. Sometimes you don’t need height when the beach is right there.
Breakfast was excellent every morning. The lounge was a nice perk throughout the stay, good selection of drinks and snacks, the kind of spot you pop into and end up staying longer than planned.
We had lunch on the rooftop one afternoon. That view is a straight up 10. The food was solid, I had a burger plate and we got the quesadillas, I’d call the food a 7, nothing that blew me away but good enough. The drinks though were a 9, well made and well priced for a rooftop with that view.
Used the gym a couple of days. Dumbbells go up to 32.5kg which covered what I needed. No complaints there.
The hotel also left a handwritten anniversary note with champagne and chocolates in the room, which was a thoughtful touch. Service throughout was warm and attentive.
If you’re heading to Rio and want a reliable, well located property with Copacabana right outside and solid Marriott perks, the JW delivers. Good base for everything the city has to offer.

Excellence in location, infrastructure and service standards

With a privileged location in front of the Copacabana beach, this luxurious enterprise boasts a modern infrastructure and a high standard of international services. By entering the imposing lobby, you can already realize the standard of comfort and sophistication of this hotel that has well trained employees. The rooms are very welcoming and have many differentials such as: coffee maker, table and iron to pass clothes, in addition to a relaxing shower, a good bed, bed enxoval and first-class bath, as well as amenities from Harus brand. The gastronomy follows international quality standards. The rooftop pool allows a privileged view of the entire Copacabana shore, as well as a view of sights such as the sugar bread and Christ Redemptor. Whether for business or leisure, experience and charm are part of the essence of this hotel.

Hotel designed to be anti-sleep

This tired and hanging hotel is only fleecing you because it’s on the Copacabana beach. If you are there on business, working nights, and need to sleep between 6am and 1am DO NOT EXCEPT ANY ROOM ON THE 2nd FLOOR!. All other floors are noise protected by a glass roof over the lobby, bar & dining area, the 2nd isn’t?? My room in 225 was closer to the dj on the maisonette than he was to the bar!
Also if you are in any cheaper room facing into the lobby don’t expect any sunlight reaching you! This room depressed me and it would force to be any else but in my room. When I did try to only return there to sleep it turned out to be impossible!?!

NO INTERNET / STAFF WALK IN ON ME / NO WORD FRM MGR.

Vacation ❘ Family
I AM A REGULAR AT THIS HOTEL and the JW brand; meaning I stay in JW's all over the world. I have stayed at this property at least a dozen or more times in the last two years. In late August, I checked in and didn't have any internet in my room. This JW is a business hotel and I work remotely throughout my vacations so I was immediately impacted. Once I told the front desk, and three visits/calls to my room, the issue still wasn't resolved. Night 1 & day 2 I worked in the lobby. The second day, they gave me a key to another room to access the internet, while I slept in my original room. Then, they moved me to an entirely different room on night two. The new room's internet didn't work either. Also, in one of those days, the tech entered my room, and commenced to work on it while I was lying in bed! I told him to stop twice before proceeded anyway. I met with a manager who defended those actions by saying "he didn't understand English" even after I told her that he had two prior conversations with me in English. Either way, he entered my room saw my hand go up along with my raised voice, and he didn't leave until he helped himself. Also on day two, I had a family member visit me and they refused him admittance for lack of a two-sided ID. This is the same family member that has visited me for three years there. The agent stated "I know him, and I know he stays with you" but wouldn't admit him because he couldn't see the backside of his digital passport (the same ID he has used to register for years there). I did everything I could do to resolve this with the management:emailed them, asked for a convo with he GM, and had one meeting with a front desk manager who stated the GM received my complaints and would be following up with me out of great concern. After one additional day of silence from management, I decided to end my stay there 2 days early. Nothing was offered to settle my traumatic experience, not single point and drink offer, nothing! Bouncing across three rooms, working in the lobby, being walked-in on while sleeping, and having the same agent that has checked in my family member for 3 years refuse him admittance, all in a two-night stay was exhausting and traumatizing. Spending thousands of dollars in a place where everyone knows your name, to result in such a horrible way has left me realizing my loyalty has been taken for granted. It's been over a week later and I still haven't mentally recovered.

Clean room with a view of the beach! One caveat - if you’re expecting a balcony none of the beach rooms have balconies. Also I highly recommend a room with a view or otherwise you may have a room that overlooks the atrium with less sunlight.
Another piece of advice - if you book an executive room it already comes with breakfast so don’t double pay! You also have the choice between taking breakfast in the executive lounge which is quieter but has slightly less options or the restaurant which has a larger buffet.
In addition the executive lounge does have snacks, cold drinks, and a Nespresso machine available for use throughout the day and they have a happy hour every evening with light dinner and refreshments and a bar.
