Authentic Bulgaria
I visited this hotel in 2004, I couldn’t go that far back on the review.
We wanted to experience an authentic and non tourist holiday to Bulgaria.
We landed and saw Maria waiting for us, everyone else got on the coach and we had no idea what was about to happen as we travelled in the dusk light into a little town and dusty road!
We had the best time. The hotel was clean, the views from our balcony were beautiful. Maria and her brother drove us into the town and picked us up. Maria had just opened the pool and we had some lovely days resting there. The food was good Maria provided.
We enjoyed a trip into Varna and Nessebar.
We went for local walks ( Maria taught me to always carry an umbrella, which I still do to this day!)
The trip gave us a sense of peace and it was nice to be away from the rat race of home and tourist areas.
I’m looking at visiting again with my daughter so she can experience the true Bulgaria

Good for Bed and Cheap Breafast! Not Much To Relax In.
Get What You Pay For! Is So True at Hotel Perla

Need some place to sleep well this is not too bad for the price! Run by good people.
Mobility issues? Hotel is built way up on a hill; you would have to go downhill for getting out and about.

Perla Hotel, Varna
As this was my first trip to Bulgaria I had only the information provided by brochure/travel agent to base my expectations, as others have mentioned not everything we were told turned out to be entirely accurate.
We requested a quiet relaxing location, away from the usual noise and buzz associated with beach holidays. In that regard we got exactly what we asked for, and after some early adjustments we loved that aspect of the holiday. We took the 31 bus to Varna from the top of the main road almost every day costing just 1lev each. In Varna there's lots to do, plenty of pubs/restaurants if thats what you want, free guided tours of the city in English and Museums/Cathedrals to admire.
Admittedly we didn't spend a great deal of time around the hotel, we ate breakfast each morning which, as others have mentioned, was toast/eggs/cold meats etc. I did expect a cooked breakfast after booking B&B but perhaps my own expectations were a tad unrealistic looking back. The hotel itself is very well presented from the outside, high gates on the drive, a nice garden and pool to the rear.
In regards to the room itself we were a little disappointed, the furniture was dated and the beds were unbearable, I challenge any couple visiting in future to have any form of activity with their partner without feeling like every other room can hear each movement. In addition to this the curtains were dirty and towels. although being changed every 2 days, had a strange smell that caused me to use our own beach towel after showering rather than use those provided. Finally I would say the balcony is pretty much a waste of time, majority of the space is taken by the air conditioning unit leaving only enough room for one small chair. A worrying sign was there appeared to be another door leading to our balcony making me believe we were expected to share that small space with another room.
That said, we found the staff to be incredibly helpful and polite. Maria collected us from the Airport and pointed out places like the Grand Mall and gave us a lot of information regarding public transport and local landmarks. Throughout the entire week Maria and her staff couldn't have been more helpful, although at times the language barrier caused a few awkward moments.
One thing I would say to anyone visiting, when considering any excursions avoid the Varna Panorama Tour, not only were they an hour late to collect us but the trip itself consists of a bus journey to Varna and then 'free time' to explore the city before collection later in the day, 59lev for what costs 2lev on the public transport without the time constraints!
As a whole I would say this holiday opened my eyes to an alternative, a holiday without commercialization where majority of the time is spent speaking with local people rather than other holiday-makers. As a result I will be looking for similar locations in future, but its unlikely I would choose this Hotel again.

Total relaxation!
If you want total relaxation and peacefulness, then Hotel Perla is the place for you!
We are a younger couple in our mid twenties and after a bit of a rough year we really wanted a nice quiet holiday destination, and as we have no children we didn't want to be surrounded by other peoples screaming darlings ... We chose well!
The hotel is run by Maria, a lovely woman who will do what she can to help, her son and 2 other lovely members of staff!
The hotel is situated in a residential road so no noise, but it is only a 5 minute walk to the bus stop headed to Varna!
Taxis can be booked through Maria, these are roughly £3 to varna (minus tip) and £7 to Golden Sands .... If you use Bulgarian versions of Black Cabs make sure you negotiate a price before you get in or they will charge you £30 for a £5 journey!! We learnt the hard way!
From what we found in our week, English is hardly spoken as Varna isn't a huge tourist trap, try and learn a few basic Bulgarian words and remember that head nodding means 'NO' and shaking means 'YES'... I caused a lot of confusion with my head movements!
The rooms were basic but immaculate, the beds are extremely uncomfortable so use the blankets to pack up the mattress!
Food offered is traditional Bulgarian and may not arrive as you'd expect it to! However the tomato soup and shopska salads are delicious!
We were B&B but we never ate breakfast (toast, boiled eggs, preserves and meats) Meals for two in Varna including drinks never cost more than £15 a night!
Rooms are sold as fully air conditioned but you do have to pay for the privilege, fridges can be put in your room for a 5lev fee!
Over all the staff are just perfect, we would definitely return to this hotel but we will take a kettle next time :)

Pleasant Hotel away from main tourist area
If you want to be next to the main tourist areas this is NOT the place for you! If you want to sample and discover the area, we would recommend this as an excellent peaceful base camp, on the outskirts of Varna.
The hotel is a friendly family run "home" ideal to recover for the next days exploration and is suited for the more mature cultural explorer working to budget.
The local beach advertised is about 1.2km away, but on roads & pathways that look like they may go nowhere. Head past the recycling bins near the bus stop and just keep going down till you find a tranquil bay/small beach with a single bar/restaurant (found on first afternoon).
Hotel is clean, well laid out and staff very helpful and offers a good local breakfast.
Bulgaria is very good value, but they tend to charge for any extras so beware or you could pay twice the price by making poor choices. Buses are excellent and cheap so use them.
