11 Amazing nights as a couple at Tamu
We stayed at Tamu as a couple for 11 nights — 4 nights in a beachfront tent and the rest in a jungle room.
The beachfront tent was an amazing experience and something we’d absolutely recommend if you want to try something different. It really feels like luxury camping right by the sea. One thing to be aware of is that it can get noisy during windy nights and early mornings when the long-tail boats start passing by. Earplugs are a good idea.
The jungle room was also fantastic and better suited if you want a bit more comfort. The outdoor bathroom was especially cool and a really nice touch.
Tamu’s location on Pagoda Beach is incredible. The beach is calm and never crowded, which we loved. Being able to sit barefoot in the sand for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was one of the highlights of our stay.
The staff treated us extremely well throughout our visit. Ann and Savai at reception made our trip even better by always helping us out with questions and making sure we had everything we needed.
The restaurant staff were all also great. During breakfast, Samar and Mean took wonderful care of us, and at dinner, Chai always provided excellent service. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for better hospitality.
They truly made Tamu feel like home, and we will miss both the place and the amazing staff. We hope to come back to Tamu one day and see everyone again.

Tamu Hotel - an exceptional hotel
In March / April 2026 we spent 6 nights incl. Breakfast for $245 per night at Tamu Hotel on Koh Rong Island / Cambodia.
Location: Located in the east of the island right on Pagoda Beach, along with 5 other small hotels. Tamu Hotel is by far the most expensive of these hotels and probably the oldest of these (due to its appearance). Outside the hotels no further infrastructure within walking distance. Pagoda Beach is a icing sugar white fine sand beach, the sea was calm, crystal clear and had bath temperature in our time. That was almost Maldives feeling.
First we were led to our “luxury tent” according to the description, an adventure we were already really looking forward to. On a pedestal stood a simple reed-covered hut built of thin wooden poles. Inside the cabin, a tent was erected with partly sloping tent walls. First, we wanted to unpack our bags. Only... there were virtually no storage areas. Offered was a small wooden shelf with a small bar and 3 hangers. Kindly we were asked if we would like to have another hanger. Inside the tent was a rather massive wall into which the air conditioning was integrated (which fortunately always worked). A sufficiently large bed of good quality was also available. But... in the hotel pictures, a bright, light-filled tent with a tent window can be seen. The reality was a dark green tent with no windows. Sparse Funzel lights brought hardly any brightness into the tent and gave a dark, narrow and uncomfortable impression. The alleged 45 m2
had probably been generously taken from the outside dimensions of the entire hut.
Now to the open-air bathroom, framed by thin wooden poles, the toilet, sink and shower were housed there. Here the daylight could not hide anything, everything made a really unkempt impression. Many white hazelnut-sized disgusting lumps (whatever that was) had formed on the wooden poles and on the shower wall, the shower wall looked totally dirty, the sink was very stained and the taps had not been wiped off for a long time. The first branches of thorns from outside grew into the bath. To my wife’s “pleasure”, sometimes thick spiders ran across the floor, stuck a moth with 5cm wing length to the mirror for a long time and a large gecko had stuck itself to a sticky mosquito trap and died there.
On the way to the dining area you pass the hotel pool. It is 2m wide and about 15m long, dark tiled and looks unkempt because a lot of “nature” floats around on the surface and is probably rarely cleaned. This small “hose pool” is the smallest pool compared to the other 5 hotel pools.
Now to the dining area and an absolute highlight – the breakfast buffet. Everything was set up on a slightly larger dining table. But on it was not only the edible, but also the toaster, a warming container, glasses, the plates and the cutlery, 1 water and 1 juice jug and much more. There was no longer much room for edibles. For example, there were small hard and dry rolls, sticky soft bread, both only edible after a round in the toaster. Only...except butter, there was nothing to top with bread or rolls. There was also no toast, no baguette or anything like that. They offered fried or scrambled eggs (no omelette) and 2 or 3 Asian things. It would be beyond the scope if I should explain more now, just look at the attached picture of the buffet and you see what I mean. But I still have to say something, for more than 30 years we have been going on holiday to the Southeast Asian region every year. Nowhere else was we presented with such a pitiful and pathetic breakfast and that at an overnight price of $245.
I only ever talk about the dining area, because there was nothing similar to a restaurant. The area was built up with wooden beams (already clearly outdated) and had a reed-covered roof. Inside was still the counter and a desk as hotel reception. The entire area was absolutely unadorned and exuded the atmosphere of a large carport.
On the beach, the hotel guests had only 8 wooden loungers with mats at their disposal.
Furthermore, there was a larger number of wooden backrests against which the headboard of a mat could be leaned. Otherwise, the mats lay directly on the sand. The sand fleas and ants felt very comfortable underneath (well, the hotel is not responsible for these animals and not that actually all guests had a fair number of severe itchy bites).
I waited in vain for someone from the hotel management or from the management in the 6 days. But no one was discovered or did not identify himself. The friendly and helpful staff was not the right contact. Usually in such small hotel complexes, someone always comes by the guests and asks how you like it or if everything is ok...misrepresentation. No question about this when checking out. A nowadays quite common delivery of a hotel review form or a sending by mail...misrepresentation. They probably know why.
Conclusion: My personal recommendation...Hands off the Tamu, of any luxury was not even remotely present. The hotel pictures on the homepage did not reflect reality. Not only were we disappointed with the Tamu, we were pissed off. The price-performance ratio was simply poor underground. After Tamu we stayed on the island of Phu Quoc/Vietnam at the 5 star resort InterContinental. Just like at Tamu we had booked 6 nights with breakfast and paid a total of just 30 euros more. There were no worlds between the two hotels, they were already galaxies.

Unlike the highly developed resort destinations found in Vietnam or Thailand, Koh Rong has deliberately preserved its wild beauty and laid-back atmosphere, which is exactly what many of our guests come here to enjoy.

Crazy scenery on deserted beaches
It was a great two-night break. The staff is friendly and speaks French. The decor is just beautiful and exceptional! The beaches were empty and beautiful. Palm trees by the beach, turquoise water and bar/restaurant in the sand, everything is beautiful , everything is good. The meals are good and congratulations to the staff for this dream stay in the tent in a postcard landscape!

I was looking out of curiosity at the old comments about Tamu Koh Rong, and I laughed when I saw some people complain... about the sand
Duh! We’re on a beach... that’s kind of the point of a place like this.
Here, no XXL resort with marble floors, but an intimate hotel that fits perfectly into its environment. And what an environment! Pagoda Beach is one of the most beautiful (and cleanest) beaches in Koh Rong. Since the few neighbouring establishments are in the same spirit, there is a good chance that the place will remain preserved and quite confidential, unlike other parts of the island.
For our part, we loved our tent: very comfortable bedding and true feeling of being close to nature. Even the giant gecko (no kidding, it was the size of a little cat) that had taken up residence in the bathroom is now part of our memories — we called it Pascal.
On the improvement side, we would simply suggest adding a small instruction for air conditioning, because it is not always clear how to adjust it.
The service is exemplary. The teams are adorable (big favorite for the manager) and always ready to help. I sprained a lot when I arrived on the island and I was brought bags of ice three times a day to relieve it.
The cuisine is excellent, including breakfast. The only downside: cocktails aren’t amazing — but they’re quite common in Cambodia, which is always amazing given the quality of the fruit.
In short, we loved our stay in Tamu, and we will do everything we can to send people there.

What a pleasant surprise!
We’ve been to islands like Maldives and Seychelles, and can truly say we have found our new favourite! They even have a spa on the beach - we enjoyed a massage with the sound of ocean waves in the background.
The luxury tent had aircon, the water activities were great, the staff were friendly and professional. We loved every option on the menu - kudos to the chef and management!
