lovely historic inn
We were warmly greeted and taken to our room. The Inn has several houses, our was the main one with only two guest rooms. Very. private and spacious. Breakfast was good- We could walk to town and to the restaurants. It was fun staying in an historic property.

spacious, but missing multiple critical elements (including light)
The room itself was spacious and clean.
Lisa greeted us and was friendly. She shared with us a driving route to the nearby natural attractions. They made decaf coffee and had a gluten-free muffin ready for us (which not all places will do).
Unfortunately, it is missing multiple critical elements and I would encourage the Inn to fix these promptly:
1. In this large space, there is only one dim chandelier and two bed-side lamps. Once the sun sets, it is *extraordinarily* dark. We had to use the flashlight feature on our phones a lot. NOTE: The photos of the room on the website are inaccurate. They appear to show a room that is filled with light. Clearly the photographer fiddled with the exposure to get the photos to look like they do. In the pic, the chandelier looks like it is casting light everywhere; it doesn't.
2. This dimness causes a safety problem as there is a stairwell with zero lighting. We both felt leery about going near the stairwell (which is tricky as it's near the mini kitchen sideboard). The stairwell also has some traditional triangular steps -- in the gloomy darkness, these are extra risky.
3. There is zero lighting on the main floor area (i.e. just inside the door before you head up the stairs). This made it feel very gloomy on our return in the evening.
4. There is no air conditioning at all (just a big fan). This is inexcusable. Had this been made clear in the description, we wouldn't have booked this. The room was swelteringly hot. And the windows don't open up fully. (To be precise, they can open up fully, but the Inn doesn't provide anything to prop the sash up fully, just partway.). Again, it was sweltering. If this was the first year this room was open, I guess you could excuse the lack of any air conditioning, but it's been rented out for at least several years now. We slept most of the night without any sheet or linens at all.
5. There is one very warm/heavy duvet. It's possible we missed it, but it would have been much better to have had a light blanket.
6. There are no sheers of any type on the windows, just very heavy and light-blocking curtains, hung on rods that are too narrow. This only added to the gloom of the room. The lack of any sheers or lace made it feel very non-private; we pulled the curtains halfway closed during the day for privacy.
7. The shower is surprisingly tight, even though they had lots of space to have made it bigger in the first place (i.e. when the place was designed). The bathroom sink and vanity is incredibly low to the ground, coming a little above my knee (though I am tall).
By an odd coincidence, I had stayed there 2 or 3 years ago in the downstairs suite (the Lawrence) and found that a bit dreary too (and with a similarly tight shower), and decided I wouldn't stay there again if I returned to Bonavista. When booking this trip in 2026, I simply didn't recognize that it was the same place as the photos make the Barn suites look so warm and full of light.
One final thing: the photo shows two comfy chairs and a third lamp that don't exist. They've been replaced with a small table and two dining chairs (without any light source nearby).

Centrally located, clean renovated inn
Beautifully renovated, airy and bright. Centrally located. Other than checkin, there is no interaction with any owner or staff member, but everything runs very smoothly.

Nice place - hold off on getting excited for breakfast
Nice small hotel with two alternative buildings. One across the road, one behind.
Plenty of parking.
Check in was easy and was shown to our suite. The suite was small but in an old building like this it’s what you’d expect.
Beds were comfy and it was nice having a separate seating area.
Breakfast in the room was included, but to be honest it wasn’t great - not much choice at all. I probably would say either improve this element or advertise it as room only.
Overall a nice short stay.
Plenty of parking.

Excellent room in a fully renovated old carriage house
This "hotel" is a unique experience, in that they have taken old houses and outbuildings and renovated them to modern standards.
Excellent room on the second floor of an old carriage house or garage. Washer and dryer in the main floor hallway was a big convenience.
Only issue we had was carrying our luggage up a flight of stairs.
