The British Columbia southern gulf islands are special by any global standard, and each of the islands has a unique character based on its geography and community. Our stay at the Mayne Island Resort allowed us to experience the best of Mayne Island. The accommodations were perfect for a great night's rest and preparing a nice meal (or taking advantage of the on-site dining room) after a day of sea kayaking in Bennett Bay, Campbell Bay to the north or waters to the south, toward Saturna Island.
We enjoyed the hot tub and pool (spa area) and appreciated the easy kayak launch site on Bennett Bay and easy walking distance to the Gulf Islands National Park area along the northern shore of Bennett Bay and southern shore of Campbell Bay. We particularly enjoyed sitting on our patio in the morning savouring a cup of coffee and watching / listening to the birds. We're not birders per se, but within a half hour or so each of three mornings were able to identify (through their songs using the Merlin app) 23 to 25 different bird species including three species of swallows (Purple Martins, barn swallows, violet-green swallows), and frequently saw raptors such as bald eagles, osprey and a red-tailed hawk, along with a blue heron.
...and we sauntered down the road for a really great craft beer at Mayne Island Brewing on two afternoons. This is a not-to-be missed part of the Mayne Island visit. Overall, Mayne Island resort was a great place to unwind and find new experiences.

Mayne Island charm with details needing attention.
The resort has a lovely location with stunning views. We stayed in a room in the main building. Our room was so small I did not have room to put my yoga mat down! The entrance to the room is tight where the sink is immediately located on your right, with NO towel racks for your hand towel or washcloth and the toilet and tub on the left. There must have been some repair work around the toilet, and the paint job behind it was left unfinished.... The bed was memory foam and comfortable. The small patio looks at the bay, but there was something patched on the railing that overlooks the bay. There was room to have larger bedside tables which would have helped with the space issue. A beach towel and bathrobe are provided, but there was really no place to put them. There are 4 hooks on the wall to hang your clothes. The restaurant is not open for breakfast, only late lunch or dinner. The daily special is the same everyday... By Sunday pm they were running low on items on the menu. The service people were very good in a busy situation. The hot tub was not in service. I feel there should always be a compensation when something like that cannot be used. If that had been a priority of mine I would have asked for one... The young lady at the front desk was polite, professional and helpful. The charm is there it just needs some refreshing!

We stayed in one of the older hotel/motel rooms for two nights - which have been updated, but were very tiny, and the balcony was great - but overall I was disappointed.
Walls were thin, and we could hear the guests in the rooms to either side of us. Bed was too firm for me, bathroom spaces were small and awkward to move around in with two people. The fridge under the bathroom sink area was a nice addition. Looks like the newer cottages/villas on the rest of the property are very nice.
Worst part: Restaurant wasn't open except one night, and it took 2 hours to get our meal, even with reservations. Had to find breakfast and all other meals somewhere else on island, and hours and options were all short on a Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Overcoming its reputation…
First time back on Mayne since the resort & Bistro changed hands. Attuned to the residual local angst about how clumsily that went down. But good casual meal. Burgers up to standard. Terriyaki salmon high quality. Prices fair. Wine list adequate. Service friendly but a bit ill-informed. More work needed to win over the locals. Hope it prospers given the scarcity of other island venues.

Disorganized, dishonest, and unresponsive customer service
Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience with this resort.
We booked a cottage in February 2026 for a wedding taking place at the end of June. The booking process was already difficult because reservations could only be made by phone, and the staff answering calls were unaware of both the wedding and the room block. Ultimately, only the owner, Darryl, was able to make the reservation.
In March, nearly three months before our stay, we cancelled after the other guests in our party could no longer attend. We were told the cancellation was processed and that our $500+ deposit would be refunded. Days and then weeks passed with no refund. I made numerous calls, left multiple voicemails, and was repeatedly told Darryl was available and would return my call, but he never did. At that point, I genuinely began to worry that we would never receive our deposit back.
After roughly three weeks of trying to reach Darren (the only person that could apparently process a refund in the whole resort), I finally received an email stating they were having trouble figuring out how to process the refund but that it was coming. A few days later, I received a refund that was approximately $108 short of the original deposit. Only when I questioned the missing amount I was informed that cancellations are subject to a 10% fee of the whole reservation total, which in our case was 1000$+ for 2 nights.
At no point during the booking process, cancellation request, or the many follow-up calls was this fee ever mentioned. Given the amount of time, effort, and stress involved in simply obtaining a partial refund, I requested that the fee be waived as a goodwill gesture. Of course I was ghosted again.
Overall, the entire experience was time-consuming, disorganized, and unprofessional. I would not recommend this place, particularly to anyone who may need flexibility with their reservation or might need to cancel in the future. We stayed at a nearby lovely Airbnb that had incredibly kind and communicative hosts. Our cancellation was made nearly three months in advance, and even then the process was unnecessarily difficult.
