Absolutely Wonderful Family Run Hotel /Motel

I am based in Dubai and was visiting Winnipeg for the first time, I was originally booked to stay at the Best Western but moved the booking to Hotel Royal Plaza because of practically a 25% lower pricing and similar reviews. This hotel is a wonderful East Indian family run hotel where they really show care for thier guests. If you are expecting a 5 star feel and treatment then honestly this is not the place to expect it from as it is still work in progress, however the rooms are large, furniture is practical, Service is brilliant, breakfast is continental, and has a basic convenience store attached.
The area of course is not the best in town as its the underbelly of the Winnipeg Downtown Area called Ellice street, but there is a Small Mall with some great food and shopping options right behind the hotel called Portage Place and all Business Offices in the downtown area are walking distances eg. University Of Winnipeg, MTS Center, Winnipeg Royal Ballet, RBC Convention Center, and the Forks (a bit longer of a walk) as well are all within walking proximity.
I would certainly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a homely atmosphere to live in, for long term stays and for East Indian food prepared in Waves restaurant below and some clubbing in Knndy Club on the ground level. will stay here again for sure if I am in Winnipeg again

Smoke-filled watery eyes, with beds thumping for 30 seconds every hour

Where to start? Greeted with annoyance, showed to my room after paying up front without any chance for negotiation, a smoke-soaked room with heavy air freshener sprayed that didn't cover it up, it was about an hour before I heard the first 30-second loud bed thumping as one of the by-the-hour rooms in this place was being rented. About 45 minutes later, another. And another. All the while my eyes were becoming more watery and my throat sore from the combination of spray and smoke.
Slept a little less than 4 hours, left early in the morning and didn't look back. Paid twice as much at the Fairmont but since it was 100x better there wasn't any question. Not sure how this place ever gets given more than one star.

COULDNT EVEN STAY THE WHOLE NIGHT....

The location of the hotel was very bad and the hotel is very outdated. They make you pay $10 for parking for one day, and I honestly didn't even know if my car would get broken into or not. Did not feel safe while bringing shopping bags back into hotel. Did not feel safe walking outside of the hotel to my car, to put my luggage back into it. Very sketchy people walking around the hotel asking for smokes. While packing my car back up at 11pm after deciding to leave after arriving 7 hours prior, a drunk girl came up to us asking for headphones. Bed felt like you were laying on top of a cardboard box. There was a large painting in the room but it was sitting against the wall, not hanging on the wall. Lounge music was VERY loud starting at 10pm. Did not want to stay the night, especially with my 7 month old daughter and young sister there with me. Some lady outside told me that the place gets very rowdy at around 1am so I'm very glad we left before that. I chose to drive home at 12am (I live 6 hours away in Regina) rather than staying the night. You get what you pay for!

Bad business model

They've managed to cancel my booking two weeks before my arrival to accommodate other guests.
They're not trustworthy.
If you're going to the Hotel Royal Plaza, try to book elsewhere too because you never know when they'll decide to cancel your booking.

103rd Grey Cup Stay

I've stayed at the Hotel Royal Plaza over the Grey Cup weekend and can't complain for under $200 for 2 nights in a limited hotel market. Given I didn't book until July when rooms we're less available for location and price I wanted. The room was a little rough on the edges with cheap furniture, dated bathroom and cheap model of TV. The staff we're friendly and hotel was downtown that made my Winnipeg exploring easy by foot. Staff was able to hold my bags before check-in since I pre-checked in early after arrival. Also convenient that's near buses for airport and the very long bus to and from Investors Group Field for the football game. Attached restaurant is your typical diner and only had one meal that I couldn't complain about. It was passable for a budget room to give me a place to stay during the Grey Cup. Nothing much else which is fine if you don't have much to spend or want to spend on lodging.
