We’ll be back!

Great resort. We had a fabulous stay.
Views to die for and the lagoon is amazing -the clearest water I’ve ever seen.
Friendly helpful staff, great choice in the restaurant.

Fantastic in all respects

Just returned after a week at Tamanu. Absolutely loved it. Great location, excellent friendly service from everyone at the resort - reception, restaurant, bar and the maintenance staff were all fantastic. Can't wait to go there again.

Beautiful Lagoon, but Service and Maintenance Need Significant Improvement

We stayed at Tamanu Beach mainly because we wanted to experience the famous Aitutaki Lagoon. From that perspective, the hotel delivered—but unfortunately, almost everything related to service and maintenance fell below our expectations.
The biggest highlight is definitely the lagoon. As soon as you step out of the hotel, you're greeted by a stunning stretch of crystal-clear lagoon with plenty of coral nearby. The snorkeling was absolutely fantastic and easily the best part of our stay.
The hotel also provides an electric kettle in the room, which is convenient. However, boiling the tap water leaves a large amount of limescale, making it unpleasant to drink. Fortunately, the reception offers free purified drinking water, but you'll need to refill your bottles yourself.
Laundry service is available for NZD 25 per bag, which I think is reasonably priced. However, the clothes felt slightly sticky after washing. I'm not sure whether this is related to the local water quality, but it wasn't the result I expected.
Now for the disappointing parts.
On the very first day, we found that the air conditioner wouldn't turn on and the room door was extremely difficult to open. Maintenance came and fixed both issues fairly quickly, but I couldn't help wondering why these obvious problems hadn't been checked before guests arrived.
Even more concerning was the condition of the air conditioner itself. The vents were covered with visible dust and mold, making it look like it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Luckily, the weather during our stay was cool enough that we didn't really need air conditioning, because honestly, I didn't feel comfortable using it.
Another major issue was the Wi-Fi. In our room, the signal was almost unusable. The restaurant and reception area had decent connectivity, but once we returned to our room, the connection constantly dropped in and out. A technician came to restart some equipment, but nothing improved. For a resort where you expect to relax in your room after a day of exploring, this was incredibly frustrating.
The restaurant service was also disappointing. During the Friday Steak Night, I understood that the restaurant was busy and that food would take longer than usual. However, telling guests not to order because the kitchen was overwhelmed was very disappointing. After being seated, we waited about an hour before our food arrived. The grilled meat itself was decent, but overall I wouldn't recommend the experience. Also, don't order the fruit platter at lunch if you're expecting fresh tropical fruit—it was canned fruit instead.
Housekeeping was another strange experience. On one occasion, we did not put up the "Do Not Disturb" sign, yet housekeeping only left fresh towels outside the room without cleaning the room or emptying the trash. We had to report it to reception before anyone came, and they arrived while we were taking our midday break. The cleaning itself also felt rushed, with only a quick sweep of the floor rather than a proper room clean.
We also asked the hotel to arrange a private tour for us. We clearly explained that we wanted a private charter, but somehow they booked us onto a shared tour instead. Nobody explained the mistake until we arrived at the harbor, where we discovered it was a group tour. We ended up cancelling the activity, wasting both our time and part of our day.
The scooter rental process was equally confusing. I booked an electric scooter through the hotel reception and paid both the rental fee and the security deposit there. After returning the scooter to reception, no one returned my deposit. Instead, the rental company had apparently taken it back. Only after I asked about it did the staff explain that I needed to go to the rental company's office myself before leaving the island to collect my deposit. This could easily have been explained when I made the booking.
Overall, the service team lacked professionalism. There was one male manager who seemed experienced, efficient, and communicated clearly. However, most of the local female staff appeared unmotivated and rather indifferent, which unfortunately affected the overall guest experience.
In summary, if your priority is simply to enjoy the incredible beauty of Aitutaki Lagoon, Tamanu Beach is still worth considering because the location is excellent and the snorkeling is amazing. However, if you value attentive service, good maintenance, and smooth hotel operations, I would strongly recommend lowering your expectations.

Kia Orana Seaside 62396220932,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the lagoon and snorkeling—these are truly special parts of the Aitutaki experience.
We’re sorry to hear that other aspects of your stay did not meet expectations. While some issues were addressed during your stay, we acknowledge there were areas where we could have done better, particularly around communication, housekeeping consistency, and clarity with bookings and services.
We provide drinking water in all rooms, along with purified water stations located in both wings for guests to refill at any time.
We would like to note that check-in time is 2:00pm; however, you accessed the room while our team was still completing the cleaning.
Air conditioning units are cleaned regularly; however, we sincerely apologize if this was not up to standard in your room. This should have been identified during our pre-arrival inspection, and we will be reinforcing these checks with our team.
Regarding your restaurant experience, our Steak Night is one of our most popular events and regularly welcomes over 100 guests. On this occasion, you arrived approximately 30 minutes prior to your booking time. Our team did advise that, due to the high volume of guests, there would be an extended wait time for meals. We apologize if this was not clearly understood at the time.
We also acknowledge there was miscommunication regarding your tour booking and motorbike rental. We apologize for this and will ensure clearer communication moving forward.
As a small island destination, factors such as water quality and Wi-Fi connectivity can occasionally present challenges; however, this does not take away from our responsibility to ensure a comfortable and seamless guest experience.
Your feedback has been shared with our team, and we are actively working on improvements across maintenance, service delivery, and internal communication.
We appreciate your comments and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for a more enjoyable stay in the future.
Tropical Regards,
Errin

Overpriced room for poor service, average food and shady airport transfer

Let me start off by saying that for what we paid for Tamanu Beach Resort, I don’t think it was worth it! I had to book our stay in Aitutaki last minute so there wqs not much availability nor time to do thorough research. Let me recap what we did not like:
1. Transfer to airport: we paid out of pocket for the transfer as we wanted the opportunity to get a good seat on the flight back to Aitutaki. This means we would need to be amongst the first ones checking in at the airport as the seats are assigned first come first serve. (The hotel provides complimentary transfers but we wanted to 'beat the crowd'). The hotel helped us arrange the transfer and said it would $10 usd per person. The driver dropped us off at the airport and wanted $20 usd per person. I said ‘the hotel told us it would only be $10 usd pp’. She then said “you have lots of ‘luggage’!!’. For the record, we have 2 carry-on suitcases, a duffel bag and a backpack. We paid her $40 just so we can move on. This incidence really left a really bad taste in our mouths. We felt we were taken advantage of because we’re tourists!
2. The stretch of beach where the hotel is located on has a lot of green ‘mosses’. Not sure what it’s really called.
3. The bungalow though spacious is somewhat dated
4. Breakfast has very limited option and low quality.
5. Staff in the restaurant is unfriendly and many cases uninterested in providing service to us. (We’re Asians from California). Perhaps they provide better service to a certain demographic? On the buffer night, there were plenty of empty tables in the dining room when we arrived. They took us to the ‘worst’ table possible near the bar. We asked if we can have another table as we did make reservations. The hostess responded ‘those were reserved’. When we sat down, the table was wobbly so another girl tried to fix it with some paper but it was still shaking. Half an hour later when all the guests seemed to have already arrived, we asked to be moved as there were still 3 empty tables. They finally agreed. This really really shows poor customer service, especially considering how much we paid for our room!

Kia Orana,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I’m very sorry to hear that your experience did not meet expectations, and I truly appreciate you highlighting these points so we can address them.
Firstly, I would like to sincerely apologize for the confusion around your airport transfer. As you mentioned, you chose not to use our complimentary transfer as you preferred to arrive early so you can get a good view of One Foot Island from the flight, so we arranged a taxi on your behalf. We were advised the cost would be $10 per person, and I apologize that you were charged more than this. I will be following up with the taxi company to ensure clear and consistent pricing is communicated moving forward.
In regard to the lagoon conditions, the green seagrass you noticed along the shoreline is a natural and seasonal occurrence in Aitutaki, typically appearing several times each month depending on tides and weather conditions. While this is beyond our control, we understand it can impact the beach experience at times.
Thank you also for your comments on the bungalow and breakfast offering. We are continuously reviewing areas of improvement across the property, including our rooms and menu selections, and your feedback is valuable in this process.
I am especially disappointed to hear how you felt regarding the service you received in the restaurant. As reflected in many of our previous reviews, we are known for providing warm and welcoming Aitutaki service, and I’m sorry this was not your experience. Please be assured that we do not tolerate any form of discrimination. Our team is made up of a diverse mix of cultures, and we proudly welcome guests from all around the world.
I do wish we had been made aware of these concerns during your stay, as our Front Office team or myself would have been more than happy to assist and resolve these matters for you at the time.
We truly regret that your stay left you feeling this way, as we aim to provide a relaxing and memorable experience for every guest. Thank you again for your feedback—it gives us the opportunity to improve.
Tropical Regards,
Family traveller

Dreamy relaxation with exceptional food and hospitality.

We loved it! Boutique resort that was luxurious and welcoming. The staff were lovely and accommodating and the food, coffee and cocktails were delicious!
We stayed in a beach front cabin which was spacious, quiet and comfortable.
Our days were spent Snorkeling and paddleboarding a few meters from our cabin or relaxing in the hammocks or having massages in the spa, it was heaven.
We were four fussy sisters who were blown away at the gorgeousness of this place! Absolutely recommend!
