A disappointing lack of basics in Dubrovnik
Let’s start with the positives. Our room was very centrally located, only a few minutes away from the Stradurn, shops and the ports. We walked our way from Gruž, which was a bit of a trek but we found it easily enough and let ourselves in with minimum effort thanks to good communication from our host. Our bed was comfortable, the shower was hot and powerful, wifi was solid and at night it was nice and quiet as the city emptied out around us.
Unfortunately, the negatives will make up the rest of my review, and there are a few. Firstly, the self catering element, specifically the refrigerator listed as a facility. A unifying aspect of all our booking decisions was the option to prepare some basic meals at home, so as to save on eating out all the time and also to store and prepare lunches and cold drinks when heading out on day trips to islands or days at the beach. This approach served us very well at our other destinations, and we planned on doing the same in Dubrovnik, bringing pre bought food and drink in a cool bag from Mljet. Upon arrival it became clear that our small room did not have a real fridge, but a mini bar fridge, with no ice compartment or adjustable settings. It was quickly apparent that the fridge was already struggling to stay cold with nothing in it, and despite putting only minimal items in, by our first evening nothing had stayed below room temperature. We highlighted this to our host via whatsapp, but we told there was nothing they could do. Whilst I don’t put the blame on our booking contact, this is indicative of the kind of business model that runs dozens of these rooms around the city. Its a bare minimum approach, as was the cramped space afforded to us around the sink and cooking hobs. You could just about put together a pasta dinner or salad with freshly bought ingredients, albeit with little point of keeping leftovers in the mini bar. There were also no proper coffee making facilities, just sachets of instant coffee which we declined to use, going out to buy the real thing instead at yet another cost.
The other major issue was the lack of drying facilities. Be aware that if you book the ground floor no.1 room, you will have no where to hang out any wet towels or clothes, unlike the apartments above. This was very frustrating when trying to dry beach towels or water shoes in between day trips to the beaches, and especially annoying when we got caught in a thunder storm on our second last night. The weather in Croatia in September is ideal mostly, but boy when it rains, it pours. Only once did we receive fresh towels and that was only because someone else was checking out. Although you could try and dry wet items in the bathroom, but as it had no natural light or airflow, your only real option would be to head up the hill to and spend more of your holiday budget and time in a laundrette. All the while the breeze blew and sun shone at 25 degrees outside our door.
For the money we paid, we would have expected better cooking, storage and drying facilities but it seems as though we would have to fork out a lot more or stay much further away from the centre to have these basics amenities provided. Add to the fact that some small furniture repairs and a lick of fresh paint on the walls are clearly a few years overdue, I’m sorry to say that I cannot recommend this accommodation for much more than it’s location.
