Hotel Babette is, most of all, full of charm. A standard double is not large but beautiful furnished, with a super-comfortable bed. The bathroom, again, is cosy but easy and inviting to use, and the amenities are first-rate. The breakfast is amazing, with mackerel, cheeses and hams as well.as the usual eggs and bacon, cereals and fruit. It is a stone's throw from a lovely park, any number of good restaurants and several museums. The staff could not have been more helpful. Thoroughly recommended.

Disgusting Experience

During our stay, we discovered a cockroach in our room on the night of our arrival. As both my partner and I were exhausted from travelling, we decided to simply report it to staff the following morning. We considered it an unfortunate but manageable issue and expected a reasonable response, such as to check the room and offer a room change. We are generally easy-going travellers and were not looking to make a major issue out of it.
What we did not expect was a complete denial of the situation. The response from the front desk manager was particularly disappointing. She was dismissive, disrespectful, and unwilling to take our concerns seriously, even asking us for photographic evidence, in which I had to ask my partner to take a photo of the cockroach before housekeeping arrived, which was sent immediately, as I was concerned the hotel might dispute what we had found.
As a result, my partner and I decided to leave the matter for the time being and raise our concerns via email instead, which she provided via a post-it. An hour later 13:11 - reference image, the manager called to offer us a different room, but only on the condition that we make an immediate decision, we explain we were in the middle of a scheduled tour and we would get back to her once we returned to the hotel. Rather than accommodating this reasonable request, she abruptly ended the call.
At that point, we were trying to enjoy our day and felt there was little value in continuing the discussion with the front desk, however to our surprise we then receive a message at 13:35, in which she wanted a response by 14:00 pressuring us again regarding the room change - I included the text on the images.
Quite fed-up we decide to contact several customer service email addresses listed on the hotel's website when we return to our hotel. Nobody mentioned the issue upon our return, so we decided to wait for a response to our emails. No response ever came.
The following morning, we checked out without any acknowledgment of the complaint. Given the experience, we followed up again by email requesting a partial refund. Days passed without a response until we contacted the hotel once more via phone and eventually received a reply from a second manager.
Unfortunately, this was equally unhelpful. Rather than addressing our concerns, she dismissed our experience by claiming the insect was a harmless local species and attempted to portray us as emotional customers. Considering the extensive effort we made to communicate respectfully and in writing to avoid further misunderstandings, we found this response both unfair and disappointing.
Since the hotel took no accountability, we raised the issue with the Copenhagen tourism authorities - you will not get your money back, but hopefully a history for the hotel builds up, as well a consulted a pest expert from Denmark. The insect was identified as a German cockroach and was not Ectobius lapponicus, contrary to the hotel's claim.
To describe this as the worst hotel experience I have ever had would not be an exaggeration. What was initially a simple issue involving a cockroach became a far more serious problem because of the hotel's handling of the complaint.
As other reviewers have noted in the 1 and 2 star reviews, the standard of customer service falls well below what one would expect from a four-star hotel. In our experience, any disagreement with management is met with deflection, attempts to shift blame onto the guest, claims that policies have been misunderstood, or suggestions that the guest's account is inaccurate. I would encourage prospective guests to read the hotel's responses to previous negative reviews and draw their own conclusions.
I have attached as much evidence, make your own conclusion and book at your own risk.

This review follows a claim for a full refund of the stay which was reviewed and rejected in its entirety by the independent Danish Complaints Board for Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism (Ankenævnet for Hotel, Restaurant og Turisme), the highest specialised complaints authority for the Danish hotel and tourism industry.
We therefore reject the suggestion that the hotel ignored the matter or failed to act. The Board concluded that the hotel had acted appropriately in its handling of the situation.
Following your report, we engaged our professional pest control partner, Rentokil, to investigate the matter. No evidence of an infestation was found, and there have been no documented cases at the hotel since.
We must also strongly reject the personal allegations made against our Assistant Hotel Manager. She is one of the most respected members of our team and consistently receives some of the highest guest satisfaction scores within our hotel group.
What is notably absent from this review is the conduct directed towards our employee. During the interactions concerning this complaint, communication towards our Assistant Hotel Manager was experienced as highly confrontational, aggressive and, at times, threatening. Other guests and multiple staff members witnessed these incidents, and witness statements were subsequently provided as part of the formal complaints process.
As an employer, we have a responsibility to provide a safe and respectful workplace. We welcome complaints and constructive feedback, but we will not accept personal attacks, intimidation or behaviour that compromises the wellbeing of our employees.
Whilst we understand that reporting an issue during a hotel stay can be concerning, the matter was addressed at the time, investigated by our professional pest control partner, and subsequently reviewed by the independent authority responsible for resolving disputes within the Danish hotel and tourism industry. We therefore find it disappointing that serious personal allegations against an individual employee continue to be repeated publicly after the complaint itself was dismissed in full.
As this review contains allegations that are inconsistent with the documented evidence and the findings of the independent complaints authority, we will be submitting it to TripAdvisor as a formally contested review. We will also ask TripAdvisor to assess the publication of screenshots of communications and references to individual employees, which we believe raise concerns regarding privacy, data protection and the inappropriate targeting of hotel staff.
We stand firmly behind our Assistant Hotel Manager and our team, and we stand by the findings of the independent authority that reviewed this case in full.
Kind regards,
Mette Baasch

We stayed three nights in this nice hotel close to the city center, room was clean and nicely decorated with style but unfortunately noisy as we could hear the street. The personnel is very helpful and friendly but forgot to indicate the bikes weren’t included. Breakfast is good but too expensive.
