Hostel Achik Wasi. Nice place, needs better housekeeping

A very nice place, but the rooms need more housekeeping attention. Almost warm shower, plugged sink, last week's dirt on tables, floors. No service between nights. If the housekeeping was better,. ... then it would be a good value

Not for the handicapped

You have to be able-bodied to stay here. Sections of the steep outside stairs to the rooms have no handrails. I did not even attempt to go to the restaurant.
The road up is unpaved, 4WD recommended. The building and rooms are charming. It’s very cold but the tabletop heater works fine. It is too far to walk into town.
The very best thing to enjoy here is the ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR view of Saraguro and the surrounding mountains.

Good Lodging in a Good Town

Another welcome surprise in a succession of relative disappointments in our Tropical Birding tour.
This is a very idiosyncratically laid out hotel that works very well. Architecture is decidedly local and substantial. Well constructed and maintained.
Staff is welcoming, attentive and accommodating.
Rooms are simply, but well and solidly furnished and the in-room electric heater is a decided plus. Wood = warm(er) flooring. This is a higher altitude and mainly cold environment. Lots of HOT water with good pressure. NO/No sound transmission between rooms: As I said, well-built, with clientele comfort in mind.
GREAT PLUS: Strong, fast, reliable wifi in rooms and reception area. (Negligible in dining room.)
Saraguro is a pleasant town and we were glad to have taken the morning off birding (happily missing a freezing, wet, windy and ultimately unsuccessful experience on a wind-swept ridge) to explore its main downtown area and squares. Our general impression is of a hard-working, entrepreneurial and forward looking-people and local government.
Architecture in this area was different from most of the others we have passed through: More solid, strong, tasteful and better maintained. We were able to find good quality, locally made gifts (Llama clothing and small decorative wristbands) at good prices for grandchildren.

Interesting place in an interesting community

Our small group wanted a cultural experience in addition to the birding we were doing so our guide suggested we stay at Hostal Achik Wasi. The staff was welcoming; the rooms were basic but there was hot water for showers! Scrambled eggs for breakfast were seasoned just right and there were pancakes as well. We spent the day with a local lady who showed us around the area; taking us to a small museum, a beautiful waterfall and to visit a fellow who shears his sheep, prepares the yarn, dyes it and then weaves ponchos, rugs, and other items. He's a one man coop!! Very interesting.
