The property is beautiful and in a very nice location to several Normandy area sites. The staff was kind but not as well informed as a concierge and since they didn’t have one, it seemed to us that this should be remedied. For example we wanted to know about the distillery closest to the hotel and they could not tell us anything even though their products were available for purchase from them. It wasn’t a big thing but a miss that seems pretty easy to address. We would happily stay their again-especially for the reasonable pricing we were charged for this period.

Based on our stay, we do not recommend this hotel

At nearly US$1000 a night, we were disappointed in this hotel. For us, the grandeur of this hotel was limited to the façade, the grounds and the casual restaurant, La Table du 1715. Nothing on the hotel’s website or our confirmation prepared us for our suite #30, Bressin, or for the 2 flights of stairs, or for the garret accommodations in the eaves of the château. What if at 84 and 79 years old we hadn’t been able to climb? The photos of the suites on the website showed grand 18th century windows, beautifully decorated. We had peepholes for windows that provided very little light. We loved the m² of our suite and having two bathrooms. But it would have been the correct thing for the hotel to warn us and to give us a choice. Housekeeping did a good job to accommodate our preferences. But the lighting, although modernized, was terrible. The wattage was not sufficient and we were brought additional lamps but still the room was dark. We replaced bulbs with our large bright bulbs but it still wasn’t sufficient. The air conditioning worked but it was cold out during our stay so we wanted heat. We were brought portable heaters. On our first two mornings, only some of our lights and electrical outlets worked. Our heaters did not work. Some kind of fuse blew and the front desk manager told us it was because we were using too many electrical outlets. Obviously, he was the type of employee who thinks the guest is always wrong. Later, we were told, no, it was a problem for an entire section of the château—not our fault. In any event, even using all of those electrical outlets, the room was dark day and night. And if you want to hear more, the light around the mirror in the bathrooms was blinding and Audre hated the “serenity bubble” shower, as well as the watery body lotion.
The first night we ate at La Table du 1715 and had a good meal with good service. The room was grand, with large windows and décor was appropriate and pleasing. Breakfast and the service the next morning were good too but there was a very annoying aspect. We wanted to have porridge and the kitchen does prepare it. Porridge cost 6€, each, extra (eggs made to order were extra too). Paying small amounts extra for this and that when we were paying a great deal of money for our suite (which was supposed to include the 60€ breakfast) struck us as “nickel and dime-ing” (cheap and miserly) and we did not like that.
Dinner the second night was at the gastronomic restaurant and the food at Le Séran was good. That restaurant is housed in the same space as breakfast and the rooms are on the ground floor. The ceilings are low, the windows are not impressive and the rooms are not grand. We did not thoroughly enjoy the meal because there was a large American group having dinner in the next room. They were very loud all evening—and annoying.
We wanted to use the hotel’s bikes to explore the large property. The bikes were old, poorly maintained, they were not electric and Dimitri could not find one he could use.
For independent travelers like us, who stay in hotels 365 days a year and treat them like temporary homes (instead of just a place to sleep), this hotel didn’t make the grade. Be warned also, that if the hotel’s restaurants are not open, it is a long drive for a bite to eat.

Beautiful Chateau, wonderful food in both restaurants and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. It really was a perfect stay and a great base for visiting the main WW2 sites.
