5 Star Service & Old World Charm

My husband and I have been to Beaune before but this time we wanted to stay a couple nights right in the center to experience the city longer. Beaune is special and Hotel Le Cep pairs beautifully with this special place. The hotel itself is so charming, unique & beautiful but the staff is amazing. They accommodated us with the little things that truly matter and make your stay memorable. From bringing shopping bag to our room without asking to organizing a wine tasting prior to our checkout but also extending our checkout to match the wine tasting. This was also done without asking. The bartender was lovely & the hotel Sommalier Sebastian was a lovely man. We learned a lot about the hotel from him and his wine education & tasting in the hotel cellar was truly enjoyable. The breakfast in the outdoor courtyard was so lovely too. A really romantic and peaceful setting. There was one younger female server 5not very friendly) who clearly didn’t know how to make a cappuccino (was serving it cold with barely any foam & also a surrounding table was telling her their coffee was cold). She was definitely the exception but thankfully a different fellow showed up and made us these beautiful hot cappuccinos. So beautiful I took a photograph. We will certainly return to hotel Le CEP and are grateful for the experience we had and enjoyed the staff immensely!

Fantastic

Structure in the historic center just steps away from all the tourist attractions. Charming place, where every corner is a discovery. It's a pity the restaurant was not open during our stay. A delight for the eyes. It's a pity it does not have a pool. Spacious, welcoming rooms and a well-stocked minibar. Bathroom amenities at a five-star level.

3.5-star hotel with five-star gimmicks

Where to start?
The incredibly loud and ineffective air conditioning, which clicked on and off all night despite the thermostat being set to 5°C?
The truly awful bathroom fixtures, which appear not to have been updated since the 1980s? (The hairdryer belongs in a one-star Travelodge.)
The attitude of most of the reception staff, who often didn’t even bother to greet us?
The constant slamming of doors by housekeeping staff, throughout the afternoon, on both days?
Housekeeping not bothering to replace empty water bottles?
Lumpy pillows filled with what felt like cubes of old foam?
Even the PLASTIC flowers in the corridors have wilted.
And if you’re going to make a feature of having an Ayurvedic centre on site, why not carry some of that philosophy through to the bedrooms? Instead, the bathrooms have cheap little plastic bottles of toiletries, which were replaced every day even when only partially used — presumably with the remainder simply discarded. It feels completely at odds with the wellness and sustainability message the hotel is trying to project.
Perhaps if some of the money spent on gimmicky room tablets, illuminated maps and an F1 simulator were instead invested in decent bathrooms, effective air conditioning, comfortable pillows and modern electrics, this might feel more like the five-star hotel it claims to be.
Instead, you can bank on standing in a bathtub to shower, lighting that belongs in the 1980s, sockets from another century, no useful modern charging points, terrible WiFi and, far too often, surly and uninterested staff who seem happier standing around gossiping than engaging with guests.
The bar was another bizarre experience. Seven of the nine cocktails we tried to order — from the hotel’s own cocktail menu — were unavailable because they didn’t have the ingredients. To be fair, when we finally found cocktails they *could* make, they were made very well.
And whatever you do, avoid Room 306 unless you enjoy hotel staff constantly going in and out of the room next door and slamming the door so hard it shakes the building. This went on for hours during the afternoon.
There was one genuinely lovely five-star moment. When we checked out, a member of staff noticed that I was struggling to arrange a taxi and immediately offered to drive us to the station himself. It was thoughtful, spontaneous and exactly the sort of hospitality I would expect from a hotel at this level. Sadly, it stood out precisely because so little else about the service felt that way.
Historic and characterful does not have to mean dated, poorly maintained or uncomfortable. Beautiful old hotels can retain all their charm while providing excellent bathrooms, modern essentials and exceptional service.
This is not, in my experience, a five-star establishment.
It’s a 3.5-star hotel with five-star gimmicks.
And, rather fittingly, even the post-stay survey they sent asking for feedback didn’t work.

A Hotel full of character in a beautiful town!

The staff were amazing, so helpful and friendly. We drove to the door where our bags were immediately taken and our car was parked for us . The receptionist took a lot of time marking places on a map of Beaune.
The hotel was full of beautiful areas to explore, including a beautiful courtyard and garden where we had our breakfast, one of the best I have had.
Our room was extremely spacious. There was a hotel spa but we also had our own spa in our bathroom - a sauna, steam shower and jacuzzi bath. The beds were extremely comfortable with sumptuous mattress toppers. A wonderful, quirky hotel full of character, in a beautiful town, what more could you ask for!

Ideal setting to enjoy a stay in Beaune

Ideal hotel to explore the Beaune area. The whole staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the hotel is very comfortable. The hotel helped us to organise two half days visits to wine yards.
