Worth doing once
The walk to the locks passing by the old bridge is nice from the hotel
However, this hotel doesn't play the prison theme at all and the decor is rather colorful, or has nothing to do with the prison theme, which is a shame,
We had a deluxe room and it felt more like being at grandma's than in a prison!
Too bad, the concept doesn't play along with the building!

Four-hour journey wasted due to poor communication
We had driven four hours to stay at this hotel and, when making the booking, we had specifically contacted the hotel to explain that we were travelling with our baby and that our baby sleeps in our bed with us. We asked whether this was okay, but received no response before our arrival.
Despite this, when we arrived at the hotel, we were told that we could not stay because there was no extra bunk bed in the room. We explained again that our baby sleeps in our bed with us, but were then told that this was not permitted because of the local fire brigade regulations. If this really is a requirement imposed by the local fire authorities, it is incredibly frustrating that the hotel did not tell us this when we contacted them before travelling. We would never have driven four hours with a baby to arrive at the hotel and be refused accommodation.
The issue isn’t simply that they couldn’t accommodate us, it’s the complete lack of communication beforehand. We had specifically raised the situation with the hotel and were given no warning whatsoever.
To be fair, the hotel manager was very nice, and did her best to help once we arrived. She offered us a drink while we sorted things out and even contacted Booking.com herself to arrange the cancellation of our room. We really appreciated her kindness and professionalism, and our disappointment is more with the communication and booking process than with her personally.
A very stressful and disappointing experience, particularly when travelling with a young child. This could and should have been avoided with a simple reply to our message before we set off.

Firstly the restaurant/bar were closed on a Monday/Tuesday so wasn’t open the days we were staying, I understand they might have this listed somewhere but I didn’t realise until being sent the details the day before and, although I can appreciate not doing a food service with no customers I don’t know why they wouldn’t open the bar for residents, we would have loved to have had a drink in the evening and experience the views.
Secondly the service is a just pretty lacklustre. Stuff like breakfast not kept stocked up; pretty early in service and eggs left from the beginning of service etc. mistakes on checkout about paying for breakfast (we had B&B) and other charges. I asked for an extension cord for a medical device, as I was leaving the building, and was handed it rather than one of the 3 staff offering to take it to the room etc. The staff were fine, generally professional and polite; so maybe I’m being unfair, but it was just a series of small poor efforts with no smile or willingness to go above and beyond. I’d describe it as budget hotel service in a high end boutique setting and we just found it disappointing.
Could be so much better with some higher standards and care.

There is a pool but very few of the rooms are air conditioned. The petit dejeuner was good but minimal, the restaurant closed during our stay. There are prison cells turned into bedrooms, cool places to walk and many a reminder this was an actual prison. All really cool. We loved the artwork.
