Quaint and Quirky

We loved our stay at Agapi. We were fortunate to arrive at the start of the renaissance festival Roi de l'oisseau in September which is a great time to visit this wonderful little town. Christine was a gracious host. Our room was on the top floor and it was a tight spiral staircase to get there. The room was spacious with a beautiful view of the Statue de Notre Dame and the town. The staircase and door could use a fresh coat of paint and a little decluttering would go a long way however some say it may add to the rustic charm. The tea house is in a great location and although there is no parking at the B&B, it is just down the road. We found the bed to be comfortable but had trouble with the water pressure in our room. Our friends were stay on the floor beneath us and had no trouble with water pressure. Breakfast was served on the 2nd floor and the choice of teas were utterly amazing. We would definitely stay here again.

Hospitality at its best

We stayed at this delightful B&B in the heart of Le-Puy-en-Velay on the 5th of June 2013.It is very conveniently situated right on the Camino. Christine is just the most helpful and kind hostess. She offered to make a phone call to make a forward booking and when we left the next morning she came out and waved us off with a 'good Camino'. There are only two rooms which you access through their tea room , up the quaintest spiral staircase. The rooms are spacious, en-suite and the bed comfortable. We loved the breakfast - I can honestly declare it was the best breakfast we ever had on the Camino! Soundproofing was never a problem even though the room overlooks the main town square - you shut those shutters and no problem.

Fantastic!

If crisp, immaculate , modern beige and cream is your choice of hotel then this is not for you. If charm, friendliness and character is then Agapi is the one. The rooms are over the Agapi tea house and over look the central square -a fantastic position. Christine is a delightful host and another plus is easy access to her tea house which is a tea lover's dream!

Very Helpful Friendly hostess

Excellent location right on the main square in town. Lots of places to eats and drink nearby. The rooms are cute and quirky and furnished in a fussy Girly style. Clean and well equipped. Rooms accessed by a Very steep narrow spiral staircase that is almost a ladder! Would not recommend if you have large or heavy luggage but if you are travelling light it's great. The location is very central but because its on the main square it can be noisy late night and early morning. We stayed on a Friday night and they set up for the market in the square very early on Saturday morning. The breakfast provided is amazing and nothing is too much trouble for Christine the hostess. I have stayed here twice and it was great both times especially if you are after something different from a run of the mill hotel.

Cute and quirky, great location and lovely hosts

Agapi is in fact a tea shop in a 17th (16th?) century building right in the centre of Le Puy-en-Velay. Above the shop on the top two levels of the building there are two guest rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. It's owned and run by Christine with the help of her husband, and they go out of their way to make you feel at home, exuding a real sense of passion for what they do, without it being overwhelming. We stayed only one night but were charmed by the experience. We would have stayed longer if we could.
The rooms are accessed through the shop (you get a key to let yourself in after hours). This is an old building and while that has a certain charm and character, it also has some inconveniences, not the least of which is the fact that the rooms are reached by a couple of flights of very narrow and steep stairs. The guest rooms are on the second and third (third and fourth if you count the American way) floors, while the lounge / tea room is on the first (second) floor. Do not come here with heavy luggage or you will regret it. However, once in the room, you realise the benefits of the location. The building is on a corner, so there's lots of light and great views onto the square below, as well as to the cathedral and illuminations at night. Lovely! It's quirky, the floors slope a bit, the walls are not straight and that's all part of the appeal. We slept wonderfully.
Breakfast deserves a special mention. Ready and waiting for you in the lounge (see photo on this site) when you get up, it is one of the most copious breakfasts we've experienced in B&Bs. It's not a cooked breakfast (you'll need to be in the UK for those) but a great selection of breads, home-baked cakes, juices, jams, and of course tea (as well as coffee if you insist). This is a tea shop, and with breakfast you can choose from the vast array of teas that the shop has on sale. Stay here several weeks and you won't have exhausted the possibilities.
The location is great and you're an easy stroll from anywhere in the town, including the main sights and of course the restaurants (just up the street there are several excellent choices). Be warned, the street is closed to cars for most of the day, although the central underground carpark is a short walk away. Anyway, you won't be wanting to bring a lot of luggage in any case because of those stairs...
I rate Agapi "Excellent" because of the atmosphere, the passion and care shown by the owners, the location and the general feel of the place (and the breakfast..). If you're biased by the lack of car access and those stairs it might drop one star...
Note that the address of Agapi is actually 1, rue Saint Gilles (and not 100, as shown in TA). It's on the north end of the street, on Place du Plot.
