Is location enough?

we often stay as a family at hostels and don't bother to write reviews because overall everything is ok.
here unfortunatly that was not the case.
the location is great, the hostel is kept clean, the bakery located at the same building is amazing and the coffee at the Titi restaurant is good, and that's about it on the positive side.
speaking of the coffee, depending on the person at the bar, you get to pay different prices for the same coffee since the guest discount is not always calculated.
we stayed as 4 family members in a private 4 persons dorm, which was tiny and hot, so we had to keep the window open, so it was extremely noisy. the matresses were bad so all of us hardly got any sleep.
we had some problems with the room, like a clogged sink and no hooks to hang towels, and had to report them over and over again till (most of them) were adressed. the employees at the reception were nice taking the notes.
the shower is literally set to 5 seconds, after which you have to push the button hard again, and there is no place in the bathroom to hang or place your stuff. which makes showering very unconvenient.
there is one kitchen for all the guests to share. it includes 2 fridges that get so overloaded that you can't find the food you stored in it. there is hardly any place available to sit and eat your food other than one bar, which is too high for a table and too small considering how many people need to use it.
we enjoyed the city and will never come back or recommend this hostel

Could be great but incidents let it down

Stayed at this hostel for 2 nights for solo travel.
Check in was later than most places at 3pm. When I arrived earlier I asked if there was a luggage storage instead (as this is fine in most other hostels I’ve stayed at) to be told that storage for the time until check in would be 5€ (for context, in the 20 or so hostels I’ve stayed in this has always been free). Considering this hostel was more expensive than others anyway I would have expected this to be included.
The room and bed itself was fine and I can’t fault that at all. Similarly the location was unbeatable.
However on the first night one of the toilets in the women’s bathrooms started leaking. Staff seemed to be aware of this as there was a cone placed in the toilet itself. However the leaky toilet water was all over the rest of the bathroom floor which in my opinion is massively hygienic. I emailed the front desk about this and said it’d be investigated in the morning and to use the bathroom on the floor bellow. At no point was the 5th floor women’s bathroom closed so god knows how many women used the bathroom and trekked the dirty toilet water through the halls. This issue was not resolved that morning and continued into the second night of my stay where the toilet water still was leaking all over the 5th floor bathroom but remained open for guests to use. I felt that this is a hygiene problem that should have been dealt with far more seriously.

I normally enjoy staying here but on this occasion after booking late checkout which is 1PM, the cleaner pulled back my curtain at 10:45 asking if I am sleeping. I informed her I have late checkout and went back to sleep because I was travelling so wanted to rest beforehand hence booking late checkout. Then an hour later at 11:45 another cleaner entered and asked why I was sleeping, I then told her I have late checkout at 1PM. After being disturbed twice I then got up because I couldn’t get back to sleep and was annoyed and then a guy from reception came to my room and said “you do know checkout is at 11am why are you still here” despite me paying for late checkout which is 1PM. Anyway I was disturbed 3 times and my privacy violated yet when I requested a refund for the late checkout fee I paid they said no. Very unprofessional and considering the amount I book and have never complained or left a bad review I expected better. It’s also not the first time this has happened after booking a late checkout, I just never normally complain but after how I was treated I’m complaining.

On the Monetisation of Thirst

One arrives at *The People – Le Marais* with the touching belief that, for Parisian prices, one might enjoy comforts already familiar to our 20th century forebears. It is a belief the establishment sets about correcting with admirable efficiency.
The showers produce water with all the conviction of a hesitant apology, while the bedrooms appear to regard ventilation as an ideological rather than architectural concern. During a heatwave, they become less places to sleep than persuasive arguments for mortality.
Hydration is treated with equal originality. The taps dispense water at a temperature best described as discouraging, whilst anything genuinely cold and drinkable must be purchased from a vending machine. It requires a rare commercial imagination to witness oppressive summer heat and conclude that thirst represents an ancillary revenue stream.
As for tranquillity, the hostel thoughtfully houses a lively bar beneath the bedrooms, ensuring that those seeking sleep may instead enjoy the unsolicited companionship of everyone else's evening.
One leaves with the distinct impression that management has confused inconvenience with authenticity, and austerity with charm. It is all terribly modern: the sort of place that mistakes lowering standards for disrupting expectations.
A memorable stay, certainly—though chiefly as a reminder that civilisation is more fragile than one had imagined.
