We had a (foot) ball in the skyline/hannover
It’s probably worth mentioning our reason for this trip to Hannover. As a group of sophisticated middle age men, we sometimes venture into cultures that intrigue and interest us. Hannover was our destination to watch Hannover 96 II. However, the trip started with a light concern that Hannover 96 II were actually playing away at Ingolstadt. Having only found out with a little bit of luck from the Irish (our good Irish/American friend in china making a £5 bet on the game) posted his bet in a WhatsApp group, and this is where we became aware. Anyway have no fear, as Hannover 96 (first team squad) were at home so we managed to get tickets to gain entry to this game, and our light concerns came to a firm end.
So, the skyline hotel, let me reassure you all, yes this is basic but it’s clever! What it does very well, is it provides you with exactly what you need and serves it purpose well. If your thinking genuine Miller, don’t, think more Chivers and your there. The room is clean, tv works nicely. The pillow is huge and caters for most heads, and the mattress was comfortable. The bathroom was clean and has a shower that packs a punch! I really enjoyed the shower, it cleansed my body and soul in one session. Please be aware though, the water can get very hot and part of my body (not going to be specific on what part) hit the temperature leaver and caught me off guard. So please be mindful of how hot the water can get.
When we arrived, the lady on the desk was superb. She reminded me of Cathy from Eastenders, so for the purpose of this review, I am going to call her Cathy (Disclaimer: Cathy may or may not be her name). Cathy made us feel most welcome. Her smile was engaging and made us feel like part of the skyline family. She gave us clear but firm instructions of how to get to our rooms, noting the floor number and room number which was extremely helpful. Cathy didn’t stop there. Her warm friendly service extended to informing us of how to make entry to the hotel once the reception was closed. It is important to note the skyline does not have 24/7 reception manning, but they are helpful and let you know how to access the hotel when Cathy has her feet up. I’d like to say a big thanks to Cathy for making me and my friends most welcome.
Now, Hannover. If you want inclusivity, there is a rainbow crossing at the tip of your toes as you walk out the train station. If nature is your thing then there are plenty of birds around, if culture and architecture are at the fore front of your mind there is a TV tower and most importantly, if your most planned request of the trip is to order a beer, this place has you covered. There really is no shortage of opportunity to grab a beer and say “Prost” to likeminded others. My mate Paul from a local brawl is a huge fan of Germany. He states that Germany gets everything right, and do you know what, he is correct! Hannover welcomes you with open arms and lets out a randy savage “oh yeah” as you explore what it has to offer. As you venture through the city, the lights of the pubs glimmer like an Arnold’s engagement ring. When you step inside some of the bars, you are seen part of the community and left feeling like you could call this home, it’s a warmth to cherish and encouraged me to “oh go on then, I’ll have another”.
The weather (disclaimer: weather subject to change) is fantastic in Hannover. Sky is very blue, not many clouds, no sight of rain and the sun is bursting through making no apologies to no one. Honestly I can’t recommend Hannover enough for the weather (subject to change).
If Breakfast is your thing, head down to a place painted yellow. Yes you may take a wait and queue, however, it’s worth it. Once we got past a little bit of woke nonsense, what we had was the more cultured sister of the Wetherspoon Trad. No swaps for has browns here! However we all agreed it was the slice of toast, with its subtle sweetness and devastating crunch that scratched the itch here. Friendly service and heated lamps for any shivering mates made this a go to place! So please head down to the yellow painted cafe right now! If it’s open and you’re here.
We then went to the football match. Well what can I say Hannover. You know exactly what you’re doing. You opened up your gates like Willy Wonker and gave me the key to the sweet shop. Do you like beer? Do you like meat? Do you like exceptional waitress service? Then book your flight now! This place has you covered. Me and my friends basked in glorious sunshine while drinking the local beer without a care in the world. At one point we even discussed getting season tickets for the football team, guys, this place can suck you in! It will take a strong will and more that a semi stable relationship with your partner to bring you back home. In the football stadium the experience does not stop there. You can have a great German pint while watching the football. My mate was very dissatisfied with the tactics on the day, but it still didn’t ruin our experience, we embraced the singing, we drank the beer and we annoyed the people around us every time we went to get a pint, one thing that was strong throughout, was my enthusiasm for German second tier football.
After the game we had worked up an appetite and decided to get ourselves in the German Prezzo to lap up some findus crispy pancakes. Unfortunately not on the menu but there was all the usual suspects to engage with. We all ordered and once we had chomped our way through it, we decided to have some more German beer. Its seemed right, it felt right, and the easiest decision was made, 34 seconds later, beer in hand. Prost!!!
So hopefully that was a very helpful, insightful, informative, structured, constructive, cinematic review of the Skyline hotel and Hannover. If Hannover asked me if I want to come back? I’d respond with what’s the mortgage rates? If Hannover provided me some sound advice, I’d sign up. It’s clear with its football culture, it’s fine weather, it’s attention to brewing the best lager in the world and a beautiful people watching experience, that Hannover is the understated Kenyan runner who gets the gold and wins hearts of millions, step up Hannover your first on the podium!

Service poor emergency call not staffed and no staff after 23:00.
The emergency numbers were not busy so I could not contact anyone from the hotel staff.
I booked through Booking.com who unfortunately did not want to help me because of your policies and similar....
