Idyllic location
The hotel room was clean, beautiful, and spacious. The breakfast offered a wide selection of dishes. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for a getaway.

Once again visited
In the 1990s we spent many nice hours at the Hotel Hohenhaus. There we felt comfortable and enjoyed the culinary creations of Achim Schwekendiek. At the time, the hotel had a Michelin star – a sign of quality and excellence for us. But in 2004, when Ingo Bockler took over the kitchen management, everything changed. Although he also cooked the star, we could not find access to his kitchen. Interestingly, we were guests in Hohenhaus when the kitchen management was handed over. Fritz Keller, the well-known landlord and winemaker from Oberbergen, was at the table. We had exciting conversations about the menu, the wines and our common hobby, football.
After a break of a few years, we returned to the Christmas market in 2008 and went out to dinner with the family – daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. But even this time the food did not convince us. It was frustrating because we had so many fond memories with the hotel.
Well, almost 17 years later, we ventured a new visit to the Hohenhaus. Peter Niemann has now taken charge, but the chefs seem to change there frequently. It’s hard to figure out who’s currently at the stove, which makes it difficult to expect consistent quality – especially in the restaurant’s remote location.
In autumn, the castle is finally to be expanded, and the gourmet restaurant “La Vallée Verte” moves there. Maybe this will bring a breath of fresh air and new culinary experiences. The hotel and restaurants are located just a few metres south-east of the castle, in the former horse stables from the 1890s. Rebuilt with great charm in 1982, they have been a member of the Relais & Châteaux international hotel cooperation since 1990. We chose a room with beautiful views of the Rotbuchental, which we liked a lot.
The rooms were classically furnished and offered contemporary living and sleeping comfort. The bathrooms with bathtub and shower were of modern standard, but we would have appreciated a bidet as a pleasant addition.
On Saturday afternoon we used the swimming pool. The basin measures 12 by 6 meters, is 1.30 meters deep and has a countercurrent system. The water temperature is supposed to be 28 degrees, but I estimate it was 23 to 24 degrees at most. Nevertheless, I pulled my lanes and then enjoyed the magnificent view of the red beech trees and the park.
On Friday evening we ate in the gourmet restaurant, on Saturday with a larger group in the Hohenhaus Grill. I'll report back.

A complete mess.
We stayed at the hotel for New Year's Eve arrangements. Two couples. for three nights. The hotel has not been renovated or modernized in 25 years. The rooms are stale and tacked down. The bathroom department is an 80s cruelty. We experienced the hotel as old-fashioned and of yesterday. For that we per person 1,600 EUR. So paying €1,000 per couple per night still fills me with.
The food was average to mediocre, so it was not worth mentioning. The only thing that really stood out was the wine list.
Nostalgic hotel visits because you were a great hotel as a young person should not be undertaken to hotels that do not move with the times.
A real disappointment.

cozy and loving
In the middle of the forest and very quiet is this wonderful hotel. The charm of this venerable house runs lovingly through. You can't expect a new, stylish hotel here, but a place of peace and serenity. The staff is dedicated throughout and always there for guests. We felt very comfortable. Also a big praise to the kitchen.

You should not be impressed by the beautiful advertising photos
The building ensemble makes a sometimes quite unfriendly and unkempt impression. You also don't spend the night in the mansion from the glossy advertising (is probably currently being renovated), but in a building to the left in front of it.
The hotel looks quite old in terms of furniture in particular.
The reddish brown stoneware tiles run from the entrance area up the stairs and corridors to the rooms.
The furniture in the room also looks worn out and wildly mixed up. The built-in wardrobe is rickety and has the best years behind it, only the bathroom has been renovated sometime in recent years.
The soundproofing of the room door and walls is very borderline, you can hear every step and conversation in the hallway, the toilet flushing of the neighbouring rooms and the conversations in front of the fireplace from the ground floor.
The dinners were fine, the breakfast did not go for a 5-star Relais & Chateaux house at all. The selection at the counter was very poor and the food was served (whether you liked it or not) on a decker, which was apparently already prepared the night before, as it was ice-cold incl. the mini glass nutella. The choice of egg dishes was limited to scrambled eggs, fried eggs, boiled egg, indicating that no cook was in the house for breakfast.
We were already in some Relais&Chateaux houses and always thrilled - Hohenhaus was a disappointment. Due to the price, the bar was very high and it was radically cracked. For the price you can also drive well and gladly to a great "real" 5-star house and also eat several times excellent dinner.
The dog costs 45,- EUR per night and gets a worn towel for it.
Conclusion:
As a guest you get the impression that this is not about the well-being of the guest, but about profit optimization.
We definitely won't come back, especially since the hotel isn't even suitable as a wellness hotel, as the swimming pool is also getting old, there can't even be any talk of wellness landscape.
