Black Forest hospitality - revitalized
Much has changed at the Hotel Kaltenbach since the daughter of the house took over leadership and management a year ago. Melanie Kaltenbach is an innkeeper. She exudes with her friendly and funny nature exactly what you want as a guest. She is incredibly nimble and reads every wish from your eyes.
As Hotel Kaltenbach is a huge relatively old building, which has probably been added and rebuilt again and again, some guests will miss their usual luxury. However, everything you need or don't need on holiday is available: Several cosy Black Forest inns, a bar, a small swimming pool, a sauna, a steam bath, a large relaxation room and a gym. Melanie Kaltenbach, incidentally, intends to have structural changes or innovations made in the spring / summer of 2026. But what is priceless is the incredible hospitality of Melanie, which surpasses anything we have come to know during our many trips.
Melanie does not cook in the evening, so you would have to drive to Schönwald or Triberg for dinner. But Melanie offers cold and warm vespers on a small menu, so you don’t necessarily have to leave home anymore. Breakfast offers everything your heart desires, on request six different egg dishes.
Our double room, which Melanie assigned us, is huge and equipped with modern solid wood furniture. In the beds you can sleep wonderfully. The separate bathroom is equipped with everything you need for the morning toilet.
From the house there is a hiking trail to the Hubertus Chapel and the Stöcklewald Tower (with Vesperstube). We also hiked from the house to Triberg (6.5 km), which was however not a good idea because of the icy steep descent to Triberg. Otherwise, you can use the regional bus connections free of charge to get to the hiking start and / or back.
Conclusion: The house Kaltenbach, located a bit away from Schönwald, offers not only everything that makes a nice winter holiday, is beautifully located and relishes with an extremely friendly service. Only the snow was missing, as we actually wanted snowshoe hiking. But it's not Melanie's fault.

Asking top euro's, for lacking service
AVOID
Charging top dollars, BUT
bad service, everything closes way early, like
NO sauna or pool after 7 pm,
NO dinner/food order after 5 pm,
NO bar after 8 pm etc.
Bad WIFI
Terrible breakfast with 3 day old hard bread etc etc
Trying to run a hotel with not enough staff (Falty Towers like)
Looks like the owner only wants to charge top Euro's,
with minimum service to the customer :(
The toilet in my room (19) was sqeezed between the bathtub and shower glass, really impossible to sit on :(
WIFI is really bd throughout the hotel, except near the office.
A few simple repeaters to improve guests experience was probably too much investment to ask for.
NO credit card accepted (cash of EU bank card only) so we had to hustle to get the bill paid. :(

Rural Location
A lovely quiet rural location. WiFi is a bit patchy but that is not a deal breaker. Beautiful views and very secluded. Great breakfast and very comfortable rooms. A small bar and plenty of parking. Very pleasant staff.

Our visit to the Black Forest
Good clean hotel, excellent food and fantastic location. The owners would do well to address negative points in other reviews, I suspect that they have been running the hotel in the same way for the last 25 years.

Not what we expected
We chose this place as was near our days activities and sounded good. We did not want to be in the busy town which was good and the place had its own restaurant and pools. After hiking, we needed it! When we got there, we found the inn was really "closed" that day so we could stay of course but no restaurant and no pool (except a cold indoor one). We were disappointed. Also, the room was spartan in furnishings though clean, and the light blew the fuse when we turned it on. They did fix it quickly though. Internet was sketchy but did work. The porch was adequate but had that tired green indoor/outdoor matting which did not invite use. Setting itself was great but should have been compensated for not having the accommodations as billed. Will not return.
