Modest, Reasonably Priced Room with an Amazing Elafonisos Beach View
We visited in September 2017 for a wedding, and the first thing I noticed is that the island in September is quite empty which is great for me and my family. August is another story, as locals describe it as chaos!
First Elafonisos is not to be confused with "Elafonisi" which is almost part of Crete!
TRANSPORTATION: We drove from Athens to Pounta in the southern Peloponnese, crossed the ferry that runs frequently to Elafonisos, and it was approximately 15 Euros for 3 people, and a car. The crossing took about 10-15 minutes, and the total driving time from Athens to Elafonisos, with a stop for coffee, and including the crossing on the ferry was about 5 hours total from Origin to destination.
The Mediterranean Star Rooms:
The room (#203) was clean, basic, and had an amazing view of the beach of Elafonisos. See the photos. Not much more you need. Price was 70.00 Euros a night. It doesn't provide breakfast, but several places nearby to get a coffee or snacks. It's located just a few hundred meters from the main harbor area, but as it's a small island, it's not the typical annoying busy harbor. More quaint, plus the cute little church on an island of its own in a way.
RESTAURANTS: I ate most of my meals only at the Fish Taverna called Menti (or Mentis in Greek). Great fresh fish and food, right on the edge of the little harbor! We had such a variety of different dishes, that they were all wonderful.
Elafonisos and town: A very quaint little town full of restaurants, shops, and beautiful sea views. Not much nightlife here, but a great place after swimming all day to take that spouse, lover, man/woman, or family and just enjoy a night of tasty food, and relax amongst the romantic moonlit night.
BEACHES:
Once you find an amazing beach, if you are like me, you just go there again and again. That beach is the world famous Simos beach which in September is practically empty. Like a giant swimming pool, because it's so crystal clear and calm. However, on windy days, it reminded me of some calm beaches in California with a bit of waves that your family will love to jump over!
JOGGING/RUNNING: I now always include a part about my jogs for those runners who may read my words. I did the round of Elafonisos island which depending on how you go is between 12-15km round the island. I did it in a relaxing 2 hours, and extended it to 18km because I went off the asphalt road and onto several dirt roads to explore. I started at my Hotel Mediterranean Hotel, near Golden star Hotel, and ran toward Simos Beach, a bit of detour, then went back up the road toward the camping, and the "periferiako" (outer ring) road and down toward the Limnitsa Restaurant (as a landmark), and then another detour left to the Panagitsa Church. Then went back down toward Liminitsa restaurant, and back toward the main town to complete the circle of the island. There will be several places along the path to get water, so the longest I went without seeing a place was about 20 minutes. Great place to run the whole island and know you are never farther than 2-3 hours from your start. Breathtaking, peaceful sea-views along the road, especially past Simos beach, and the highest elevation climb my Runkeeper app logged was about 55 meters, for a total of 215 meters uphill for the full 2 hours. Not too many cars either to worry about.
OVERALL: This island is just what busy American/British and other tourists who are so tired of the hussle and bustle of their city life. Come here, limit your socal media, swim all day at the relaxing beach of Simos, enjoy lunch at one of the taverna's near Simos, then come back, take a nap, and then go out for dinner, maybe even a swim before near your hotel as all beaches in Elafonisos (even near the harbor) are perfect to swim! Then a quick shower, followed by dinner, drinks, and a stroll after dinner with the moon as your guide, and finally a night cap at a few of the relaxing cafes... This is the life..
