Great hotel in Lixouri

Great 3* hotel in Lixouri, Kefalonia. Accessible by ferry from Argostili 35 mins boat ride.
52 rooms with garden or sea view. A 5-10 mins walk to the main square.
Large swimming pool area with outdoor snack bar.
Very good value for money.

Avoid Palatino Hotel at all costs – dirty, terrible food, and chaotic pool area

The only positive aspect of Palatino Hotel is its location, being about a 10-minute walk from the city center. It might work if you literally only need a bed to sleep in, but otherwise, I strongly advise staying away.
The breakfast is a total disaster and an absolute embarrassment. They reheat leftover ham and salami from the previous day, the eggs are clearly old, and the tomatoes are the lowest quality imaginable. The coffee is completely undrinkable, and to top it off, there are only two toaster machines for the entire hotel.
Animals roam completely freely throughout the property. Cats walk around the dining room while people are eating, and they even climb into the rooms through open balcony doors.
The pool area is dirty and neglected, with trash lying around everywhere. The grass is falling apart and turning into mud, the sun loungers are filthy and uncomfortable, and the umbrellas are literally torn to shreds. Getting in and out of the water is unsafe due to wobbly pool ladders. Furthermore, a large family from the UK completely took over the entire pool area, acting like they owned the place with zero consideration for anyone else.
The staff at the pool area only made matters worse. The lifeguard sits behind the bar all day staring at her phone, only looking up to scream "no jumping!" at guests. The other bartender, Joanna, was incredibly cold, unpleasant, and completely indifferent. Pricing at the bar is an absolute scam—the price for a Frappé coffee changed every single time depending on their mood (charging 2.50, then 3.00, then 2.20, then 2.30).
Lastly, the room for three people with an extra bed was tiny and extremely cramped.
This place is a nightmare and definitely not worth the stay. Do not waste your money here!
Of course, I fully expect the management to reply to this review claiming that none of this is true and denying everything, but this was our honest, daily experience. This place is a nightmare and definitely not worth the stay. Do not waste your money here!

Lovely family run hotel.

Just back from 2 weeks at this hotel. It’s our third year staying there. The reasons we picked it originally still stands. A nice pool, air conditioning included in the price. Close to the harbour and all the restaurants etc.
This is a family run hotel with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Our room was on the first floor this year and was cleaned daily with regular changes of bedding and towels. Beds are comfortable and hotel is generally quite so easy to sleep.
Pool is a good size and clean. Yes opening hours are limited from 11am till 7pm. There is a life guard on duty between these times. The pool bar serves drinks & food at reasonable prices. My only niggle is that I wasn’t always charged the correct price for drinks but didn’t want to make a fuss by pointing it out.
The hotel is short walk to the harbour with all the shops & restaurants. Coming back is a little uphill though.
Breakfast is eggs, yogurt, fruit, bread, cakes etc and we think it’s very good.
We enjoyed our stay very much.

Family holiday

The hotel is at the top of a hill approximately 10 minutes walk to the main square where the majority of restaurants, bars are shops are located.
It will cost 5 euros for a taxi to the square and the same on return
The hotel is very, very basic but very clean. The room we were allocated was on the ground floor. It was quite small and very dark with only the main entrance door for any day light.
The room was okay but very basic. A kettle a fridge but no cups, no tea bags, no spoons and no water, nothing.
Double bed and single bed/sofa bed that tucked under this bed.
I have to say the room was very clean and it was cleaned every day with towels usually changed every day.
There were two wardrobes, 1 dressing table and two wooden chairs. Which in my opinion need replacing and modernising. 5 hangers in each wardrobe. 1 safety deposit box but not fixed to anything.
The bathroom was really nice. Big bathroom with large shower with sliding glass door. Big enough for 3 people easily. Bathroom was modern and clean.
The hotel reception area is nice and clean and the breakfast area just off reception is adequate and clean.
We stayed B&B and this consisted of eggs either boiled, scrambled or fried, beans, fruit & Greek yogurt, cold ham, tomatoes, cucumber, toast & jam or Nutella and 3 types of bread. Breakfast was very nice in my opinion and well set out. Although a toaster might have been better than trying to toast bread on a Panini maker.
It was well looked after and staff were really nice.
The pool area is nice, well set out but I have to say that the sun beds are uncomfortable and very low. Could definitely do with new beds with some type of cushions on them.
So here's the gripe. You cannot use the pool till 11 o'clock until the lifeguard arrives. So if you have kids then they cannot use the pool till 11am. In my opinion this is ridiculous and needs altering. The lifeguard should be starting early so people can enjoy the pool. The lifeguard in my opinion is a little high-handed and should be more tolerant where other are concerned.
The pool is very clean and well maintained. The bar area is nice with plenty of choice regarding drinks and not that expensive. Food during the day is lovely and well prepared and we had most things on the menu. Bar staff are lovely and help in anyway they can.
Second gripe. The only food they served on an evening time was either pizza or toasties. No fries or anything else.
The pool area is nice on an evening time and we would have liked to stay around the pool area to have a few beers and some food but not pizza or toasties. This in my opinion needs changing.
My third and biggest gripe is that there are no toilets around the pool or bar area . Please explain to me why would you have a bar serving drinks etc and not have a toilet. It's a trek and a half to get to the toilets. God help you if you have a problem cause you'll need to set off 5 minutes before you need to go to get to the toilet. Then the toilets are down a set of curved stairs. Very dangerous if your wet and slip.
Absolutely ridiculous and this needs resolving asap. Could not believe this. Very dangerous for kids if needing the Loo and are wet out of the pool.
The big question is would we go back.
Possibly if we were going back with the whole family like we did this time but not as a couple, especially without toilets near the bar/pool area.

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the cleanliness of the hotel, the breakfast, the pool area, and the friendliness of our staff. Your kind words mean a lot to our team.
We also appreciate your suggestions regarding our facilities. We would like to let you know that our sunbeds were replaced with brand-new ones this year to provide greater comfort for our guests.
Regarding the pool operating hours, these are set in accordance with local safety regulations requiring a lifeguard to be present while the pool is in use. We understand your point of view and appreciate your understanding.
Your comments about the evening food options and the toilet access have also been noted and will be taken into consideration as we continue to improve our services and facilities.
Thank you once again for your valuable feedback.

Mixed Experience

We recently stayed at the Palatino Hotel and overall had a pleasant stay but there were a few things that stopped it being a higher rating.
The room was basic, but that's expected for Greece, the beds were comfortable and the free air conditioning was excellent. The cleaners came in daily to freshen the room, they were fabulous.
The pool itself was lovely and the food served at the pool bar was good. Unfortunately, the pool experience was let down by the "lifeguard". Her manner came across as quite intimidating and some of the rules seemed to be made up on the spot, such as only allowing one dive into the pool per day!! You constantly feel like you are being watched by her, not in a lifeguard capacity. The pool also doesn't open until 11am because that's when the lifeguard starts, which was disappointing as I enjoy an early morning swim. It also closes at 7pm, which felt quite early.
The bathroom shower and tray were covered with mould and grime and it had a damp smell.
The fridge in the room was very small, had broken shelves and became very hot on top, there was a drawer above it and we couldn't put anything in due to the heat.
The location offers lovely views, it's around a 10–15 minute walk downhill to the tavernas, with a fairly steep uphill walk back. Breakfast was quite basic and the same every day. We also had a late flight home and asked if we could keep our room on, we were told the hotel was full. The alternative shower room provided was very poor, down in the basement, tiny, with no air conditioning, no mirror, no plug sockets and just a handheld shower over a tray, toilet and sink. It wasn't ideal for freshening up before travelling and we didnt use it.
Overall, we enjoyed our holiday and there are some good points to this hotel, but there are several areas that could be improved to make guests' stays much more enjoyable.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback following your stay with us.
We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your holiday overall. Your kind comments about our housekeeping team are especially appreciated.
At the same time, we are sorry to learn that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. Please note that the pool operating hours are determined in accordance with local safety regulations, as a certified lifeguard must be present whenever the pool is open. We understand that this may be disappointing for guests who enjoy an early swim and appreciate your understanding.
We also regret to hear your comments regarding the bathroom, the refrigerator, the breakfast variety, and the courtesy shower room. Your feedback has been shared with the management team, as comments like yours help us identify areas where improvements can be made.
Thank you once again for your valuable review. We truly appreciate your suggestions and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for an even better experience.
Kind regards,
Palatino
