Nice week away

Pleasant week in Agios Nikolaos very early in the season but we were lucky enough to have warm sunny days every day.
On the downside the airport at Kalamata was quite frankly a shambles. It took us 90 minutes to get through passport control and they were not even using the new biometrics system! Just a lack of staff on arrival.
To make things worse our Jet2 transfer was actually more like two hours than the advertised 90 minutes.
Not a good start to our holiday. Upon arrival at the Stephanou Inn studios we were greeted by the owner who gave us a warm and friendly welcome with a complimentary bottle of wine, milk and juice.
We were the first and only visitors of the season until a few days later and as the studio had been closed up for the winter it was freezing cold in the first few evenings until the sun had a chance to warm the place up. By the end of the week it was much more comfortable and will probably be just right when the high temperatures of high season arrive.
Sadly the swimming pools had not been emptied from the previous season and the sun-bed and relaxing area including reception was not yet open and in need of a good tidy up.
Jet2 had not pre warned us about this and in fairness, as this was not as advertised, they did credit one of our next booked holidays with them by £200 once we pointed it out on our return.
The studio was very nice and well equipped and we enjoyed two terraces one for the morning and one for the evening.
Our housemaid came to change towels twice during the week.
We also managed to get a couple of sun loungers for the terrace for relaxing and reading in lieu of the pool area being available.
Agios Nikolaos is a lovely traditional fishing village and as we hit the run up to Easter week it was starting to get busy.
I dread to think how busy it becomes in the height of the season with so many people staying in the many property rentals or just visiting for the day.
There are a couple of shops for self catering supplies and a handful of tavernas with Elli’s being the most popular so booking is recommended. We visited Elli's three times and the food and value for money was great.
Sadly on most days there were a group of kids racing around the tiny streets on e-scooters which are simply an accident waiting to happen. Enjoyed nice walks to Stoupa and Agios Dimitrios.
We might one day visit the Mani penninsula again but probably wouldn’t return to Agios Nikolaos except maybe for a day trip.

Lovely place to stay to appreciate this traditional Greek area.

Loved this place. Our “maisonette” turned out to be a whole house! We had a table and 4 chairs in a shaded area, another set indoors and another one on a large upstairs verandah; 2 sofa beds in the living area; 2 shower rooms with toiletries and hairdryer; a double master bedroom with plenty of storage and a small balcony with airer; a single bedroom with fan and storage; the verandah with rattan chairs, a glass coffee table and wonderful views.
The kitchen had a large fridge freezer as well as an under counter fridge; a proper oven and hot plates; plenty of cutlery, crockery, pans, mugs, glasses, tea towels; kettle, sandwich maker and toaster; thoughtful additions such as olive oil, oregano, salt, pepper, a few tea bags, fruit juice, water, washing up liquid and sponge.
I’ve never stayed anywhere with its own library! There must have been 30 books in there. I added a couple more.
The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, ‘lived in’ rather than pristine, the housekeeping was discreet and immaculate every 3 days.
The pool area is lovely with plenty of comfy sunbeds as well as tables and chairs. There are flowers, fruit trees and veg growing around the edges. There’s a windowsill stocked with sun cream, sprays and all sorts of things for you to use if you’ve forgotten anything.
We didn’t eat breakfast there so can’t comment on whether the €15 price was worth it.
We were a little surprised to note that the pool area is supposed to be closed 2:30-5:30pm. It’s a very traditional Greek area so clearly we respected siesta time but found that other people also quietly used the pool during that time. The main pool doesn’t have a shallow end but there’s a shallow pool above ideal for paddling or sitting in to read.
We hired a car so the parking was handy. The accommodation is on a narrow lane but access was fine. Note that you have to walk about 150 metres from the coach drop off point if travelling with Jet2.
We appreciated the included air con. I would have liked to have had it slightly cooler at times but it seemed to be preset.
The Inn is ideally located to wander down the lane to the tavernas, supermarkets, pharmacy, harbour. It’s 5 mins walk to the swimming platform and start of the coastal path to Stoupa.
Don’t hesitate to stay here.

Hideaway in a tiny harbor village

We have just returned from a very relaxing holiday and can absolutely recommend Stephanou Inn with its very friendly staff. Breakfast on the terrace or by the beautiful pool area will make the day start stronger and relaxed. The pool invites you to swim in the morning, which we have used extensively. The equipment of the duplex is very generous and has several outdoor areas. Always again !!! The harbour and restaurants are only a few minutes away. Agios Nikolaos on the Mani is a “Juvel.
