Six wonderful off-season nights

My wife and I stayed at Villa Athena for six nights in October. The room was comfortable, with an amazing view of the sea from our private patio. We cooked dinners three nights in the villa (which was well provided), and were invited to dine with our hosts, Vaggelitsa and Panagiotis, the other nights. Vaggelitsa cooked and served fabulous traditional Green dinners (lamb, moussaka, stuffed peppers) family style, and we drank wine from the family vineyard. A true Greek experience! We were also able to watch Panagiotis and his crew harvest olives in the fields near the property. Naxos (and Villa Athena) will always have a special place in our hearts, and we hope we might return some day. A rental car is a must, especially during the off-season, as there are no markets or restaurants (other than the family-owned tavern, which was closed), but there is so much to see on Naxos, you will want a car in any event.

Villa Athina Naxos

We had a wonderful time staying at Villa Athina, the property was lovely and had everything we needed. We went down to the beach, had a drink at the family's taverna, swam in the pool, bought drinks at the pool bar and explored the island. The view from the villas is stunning. We also cooked our own bbq on the terrace. There is plenty of space for parking, i would say it is important to have your own car if staying here and wanting to visit the rest of the island as there are no shops within walking distance and no restaurants except the family taverna. We used the car to visit the sandy beaches in the South of the island, Naxos town and to go on some hikes up Mount Zas and to villages in the middle of the island.

Superb view

The view from the balconies and from the pool is amazing. The beach (not organised, with pebbles) is a short walk down through a steep path; there's one taverna there, belonging to the same family (mediocre in terms of both, food and decoration). We didn't find the breakfast particularly tasty on the first day, so we opted for our own preparations - you have to bear in mind, however, that the closest supermarket is near Naxos Town. Furniture inside is not really 'cycladic', also our bed was very small - however our friends at another villa had a normal sized one. As written before, the views compensate for these small inconveniences.

Lovely hideaway with a view to die for

What a fantastic place to hide away and recharge your batteries. Athina, George and the family have hospitality at their core. They have developed lovely apartments, a stunning pool and a family style restaurant on the shore with great homemade dishes, and they even made specials on request! The Uncle looks after the pool bar, and serves breakfast there if you don’t fancy walking down the hill. They grow fruit and vegetables in their gardens and were very generous with giving us extra treats for our room and when we ate in the restaurant. The prices for pool drinks and in the restaurant are very reasonable- they do not try and take advantage of the fact that you are isolated there. The only challenge we had was getting a taxi from the port - probably better to get them to pre-order one or hire a car as it is remote. Also do take any consumables that you may need - such as shower gel, coffee etc...
We had island hopped and this was our 5th and last stop, we definitely kept the best for last.
