Calmness
If you want to get away somewhere far from the noisy cities and everyday rush, give this monastery hotel a chance. I am a returning guest because of the lovely atmosphere and good service; they have nice and clean rooms, good kitchen, great library in the attic and fantastic rooms for meditation and yoga (and wifi in case you went too calm :) ). In addition there is a beautiful garden and a forest just next to the building complex. Easily accessible by car. Staff is nice.

Great 'slightly off the grid' location in the Sopron hills - but we sure wished it had AC, ref and TV
We spent aq night in the monastery hotel of Sopron, which used to be under the Paulinians, then the Discalded Carmelites. As the name implies, it was a monastery but converted into a boutique hotel. As you can guess, it's quite an experience, including the fact that your room was most likely a wall away from the regular church.
The hotel is above the town outskirts and claims a good view of the outer Sopron rooftops. There is a modest door that you enter, which gives a taste of the monastic life that monks used to live there before. Then the reception room and then a door that led to the main cloister, turned ground floor rooms. There was an elevator (we were afraid there would be none) to the 1st and 2nd floors. Rooms opened with real keys.
The rooms are unusually spacious, with a large living room area, which had a full sofa set with carpet and coffee table. The ceilings are still the monastery ceilings with their vaulted arches. Two globular stand lamps, a wardrobe cabinet, a small work desk with table lamp, and another cabinet on the opposite side of the work desk completed the furniture. Wifi signal was decent. The reception staff was very helpful.
A door led to the bedroom, and from the bedroom was the door to the T&B. The T&B was quite basic, with two sets of towels, a small soap bar, and a shower gel per person. The bedroom night tables also had their own globular table lamps. The trash can was hidden inside a fancy wooden box with lid. The floor is made of wood boards - you could imagine the monks treading the very same in their bare feet.
The room charge included dinner, since there was nothing close by. And dinner was nothing fancy - a soup dish, a salad dish, a main meat course, with couscous, white rice or onion rings on the side. And you could also get coffee or tea. The soup was hot, the pork was tender and tasty, the salad was really well done - everything was good. We asked for - and got - ice and wine glasses. Breakfast wasn't as good - with only scrambled eggs and sausage as the hot food. They could have put in fried eggs, bacon, mushrooms, grilled veggies as most other hotels do.
Our main issue was the lack of ac. It was the middle of a heat wave so for a foreigner, having no ac was extremely difficult. But I presume the monks never complained. We also did miss having a fridge and TV. But I guess the old monks didn't care for any of those!

A bit of a strange one
Beautiful old building. Pleasant single room overlooking the garden. Very comfortable bed and nice bathroom. A bit of a hike from the station for me, though I could have taken the bus. As it is rated 4 star I was expecting a restaurant menu but there was a very limited buffet dinner, maybe because they had a school group? Not a relaxing evening. 4 star service resumed in the morning with a very good breakfast!

How would you like to spend the night in a 12th c. monastery turned luxury hotel?
2 years ago I decided to spend a few days in one of Hungary's only currently functioning church-monasteries that allows visitors to stay overnight as parts of it are turned into a luxury, historical-heritage hotel. It surpassed all my expectations on all levels: price, look/style, modern amenities, breathtaking dining room with ancient frescoes and embellishments from various eras offering prompt service and delicious meals and a wide selection of choices respecting lactose free and other choices, even coconut milk among the breakfast choices.... I was simply blown away. The lovely walk down the sculpture dotted staircase on the side leading to a small village and to yet another small church was all adding to the romance and my eternal love for this place. If you are in a curious, contemplative mode, go and discover this gem of a place for a night or two and marvel at its beauty and participate in a gorgeous catholic mass in the church that is adjacent to the hotel and functioning also for weddings and christenings or simply daily prayers. When we were there there was a beautiful wedding going on...I dream about this magical place ever since. Next day we drove to Sopron, a 'baroque jewel box' of a city closely situated and easy to find. ENJOY and PAMPER YOUR SOUL!!!

A superb place for relaxation and reflection
This is my third or fourth visit. I come to chill out and reflect on life. What a superb place to do that - a converted Monastery. Great food in the restaurant. Walks in the forest surrounding the monastery. There is a TV room upstairs but none in the rooms. Remember this is a place for reflection and relaxation.
The monks cells have been totally transformed for comfort and all have ensuite bathrooms.
The town is about 4 kms from Sopron - There are two buses that take you to Sopron the 10Y and the 10. The 10Y leaves at the foot of the monastery at 18 to 20 minutes after the hour e.g. 10.18. 11.18 etc the 10 at 38 minutes e.g. 10,38, 11.38.
Coming back works the same way but at 45 minutes past the hour (10) and 58 minutes past (10Y).
