Don't trust your online booking

I made an online reservation via booking.com for 1 night and received an booking confirmation. The day before arrival I sent a message to the hotel, just to reconfirm my booking and to ask if everything is ok. The Hotel informed me that they are fully booked and that my booking has been cancelled. That means, the hotel ignores my online booking. This is about not reliable and not trustworthy.
If I place a booking and have a booking confirmation, how can they cancel the booking without informing me immediately? This a very bad behaviour.
