It’s very well known by everyone in town. It’s also perfectly located for catching a tuk‑tuk to the temples and churches.

Great for a train transit stay, but check the hot water!
We chose Hotel Astoria because we had a 5 AM train to catch from the Madurai Train Station. The location is incredibly convenient—only about a 7-minute auto-rickshaw ride from the station.
Booking online was a bit of a hassle, though. Instead of allowing direct payment on their website, they use a system where they send a payment link via WhatsApp. The staff was very well-mannered, but they were quite slow to respond to our payment requests because they had to repeatedly check with their manager, which dragged the process out over several days and required multiple calls and texts from us.
The hotel sits on an extremely busy street, so we requested a room away from the traffic and were placed in the annex section. It was a great call—the room was surprisingly quiet with absolutely no outside street noise. The lobby itself is pretty spartan, but check-in was smooth. The room was clean, the WiFi connection was strong and reliable (crucial for checking early morning train statuses), and the AC worked perfectly, keeping the room very comfortable against the Madurai heat. The bed was also incredibly cozy.
Our only real complaints were minor maintenance issues. The room locker didn't work, and worse, we discovered the hard way in the morning that the hot water wasn't working—a big annoyance before a long travel day.
On the bright side, catching a ride at dawn was effortless; we easily found an auto outside at 4:30 AM for just 100 Rs. Hotel Astoria is a solid, practical choice for a transit stay, but I’d highly recommend testing the hot water the moment you get to your room so you can ask for a change if needed.

They put me in the old building in a very run down room...not matching your photos...and very noisy near front on main road....they changed room but stayed in old building of astoria hotel with less noise but still a run down room and bathroom, as the new hotel building is across the street...

Not a 3 star hotel as described on review
Good location on a busy noisy street. We had standard room which is on the opposite side of the road next to "veg rider" while superior rooms is on the other side of the road opposite of YMCA cafe . Good staff but below average breakfast. Clean room Be wary that the picture shown when booking on any hotel booking site be Agoda or Booking.com or Expedia is the one for Superior Hotel. Not value for price paid.

A good base for visiting historic Madurai
We stayed one night at the Astoria Hotels 2.0 in Madurai. This was booked as part of our Essence of Idyllic South India tour operated by Payless Tours.
There are two Astoria Hotels in Madurai with 2.0 directly across the road from its sibling. We went to the original building first and were then directed across to 2.0. If you want lunch or dinner it is only available in the original property.
We were allocated a room on the top floor of accommodation (the breakfast restaurant was above), with a balcony looking out towards the city. The view was great!
Unfortunately, the room was a twin, and not a double as had been booked. Maybe it was because we were two males? We won’t ever know as we just accepted it for one night. No matter the bedding mix-up, the staff were really nice to us at both properties.
The room was a good size and spotlessly clean. The single beds were very comfortable. Very nice sheets and towels. The room also had a great bathroom,
We had lunch and dinner at the original Astoria Hotels and both were good.
Breakfast was at 2.0, up on the top floor. All of the usual Indian breakfast staples were offered.
Astoria Hotels is a good option if you are visiting the historic monuments of Madurai.
