The chance to stay in a real palace without breaking the bank

It's not often that an ordinary person gets the chance to stay in a palace. There are many hotels in India with Palace in the name but this is the real deal. Built in 1921 0n the orders of the HH Maharaj of Mysore to house important visitors it retains the grandeur of a bygone age. We came to stay for one night sand stayed for three. Others have used the word faded to describe the grandeur and we wouldn't argue with that. If you look closely there are things that need maintenance, but running a palace as a commercial venture was never going to be easy and I think the same is true of staying at Buckingham Palace. For us, just simply being surrounded by the decor and the art was enough to make it a memorable experience.

Once an opulent palace residence but now sorely in need of complete restoration.

We read reviews stating the hotel outstanding, sorry but this is not the case. We arrived at the entrance no one available to help with luggage , reception we thought was a travel agent as no acknowledgement. We were eventually shown our room which was unfit to stay in, it smelt damp and wallpaper was hanging off the walls, paint peeling. We refused to accept the room and were offered an upgrade which we accepted as we had travelled a long way and were tired. Room again wallpaper and walls peeling bathroom was terrible. Such a shame and disappointment as this hotel would have been magnificent in its day, the restaurant still showed opulence but sadly the rest of the building has not been maintained. We were so disappointed we only stayed one night of our 2 night booking.
First impression of hotel as you enter up the driveway is wow, but it ends there.
We may have been unlucky as an Indian wedding was being held and the whole of the hotel and grounds had been taken over, and I guess the employees were catering for their needs and not other guests visiting Mysore.

A palatial stay in Mysore!

A palatial stay in the heart of Mysore! A palace stay like no other! It was a beautiful restored property! Amazing facade, stunning architecture, great hospitality esp by the guards, the room was amazing, spacious and clean with pool view. The restaurant has great aesthetics and equally delicious food! It aldo houses a 105 year old lift. Overall a lovely experience!

A Fading Icon in Need of Urgent Restoration

I first visited this restaurant in 2010 when it was under ITDC management, and it was a stellar experience. Returning in 2025 under JLR (Govt of Karnataka), the decline is heartbreaking. While the "Royal Feel" and the architecture remain, the management is failing the property.
This is located at the foothills of Chamundi Hills and get a great view from here. Rooms are wide and large but proper maintenance is required.
The Good:
The live music creates a wonderful, high-vibe atmosphere.
The palace architecture still provides a sense of royalty.
The Bad:
Service & Hospitality: The staff lacks basic hospitality nuances. I also observed instances of corruption that are completely unacceptable for a heritage site.
Food: The buffet is overpriced for what is offered. The variety is limited, and the taste and quality have dropped significantly since the ITDC days.
Maintenance: The building is aging poorly. You can see leaking walls and chipping paint everywhere. It needs a massive renovation to survive for the next generation.
Note on Ticketing: Be aware that they charge a ₹150 entry fee per person at the gate (even with a pre-booked buffet). While they claim it’s discounted against the final bill, the overall price still doesn't justify the service level.

It's a wonderful experience!

A real palace! Now all the walls on the outside and inside have been restored! The bed is comfortable! Just a little bit of bathroom upgrade left! All shortcomings are compensated for at a very acceptable cost! I wish the owners well!
