Service is Only as Strong as Its Weakest Link
I recently attended a conference in Pune at the Trident, where I was invited to join a guest speaker on customer service. Stepping out of the cab with the speaker, the doorman greeted us warmly and assisted with the bags. That small gesture immediately made me feel welcome and set the right tone — exactly what you’d hope for at a five-star property.
But the experience quickly shifted. After passing through security, I reached the bell desk at 10am, where we planned to leave our lugagge and umberella before heading to the conference area. The gentleman in a black jacket behind the counter came across as cold and unempathetic. Despite me clarifying that we were there for the conference, he repeated that the desk was only for check-in luggage and instructed me to take everything across to another area, where “someone would help.” No one was there when I arrived, and eventually the conference organiser kindly allowed me to leave my things at the welcome desk. Atleast he could have got one of his 7 team members to escort us to the conference area? But no.
The irony wasn’t lost on me: I was there to listen to a session on customer service, and this experience became an unplanned but perfect icebreaker with people I hadn’t met before. It’s a reminder that in hospitality, the guest experience is only as strong as its weakest link.
