Private, quiet, clean, and the food is nice!

Maya is one of the oldest hotel in Kupang that is featured in LonelyPlanet. They used to cater all sorts of travelers and backpackers : surfers, family, even to East Timor refugees. Now it is under a renovation and the results are delightful! Very fitting to the price. The breakfast is improved : rice and simple local dish. If you want to order something different, the chef is almost always ready to serve you with nice food for a simple hotel! The location is very strategic and you can stop the local transportations called bemo right in front of the gates. The bemo routes are indicated with their number. Because there are not much printed information about the routes, you can ask for directions or even order taxi via the receptionist. You can also ask for an ojek (motorbike) ride. There's a beach across the road called Ketapang Beach and there are snacks and roasted corn being sold along the road. That's why the road can be crowded and noisy : it's a nice place to chill! If you want to walk for a bit, it's only 10-15 minutes away from a night market (go straight left until you see it) and local convenience stores (seek for Rukun Jaya on the right direction of the hotel, it is a big store). You can go for an Instagram post hunting in the Instagrammable area of Kampung Solor. It's the area around the night market, and I can safely recommend you to go when it's daytime so you can see the old 'ruins' of this city hub where Dutch colonialism once settled here :)
If you stay in the more expensive room in the front of the hotel you can look out at the calming vast sea, and see sunset out of your window ;) It's a cozy and quite spacious.

Quiet small local hotel in good location for Kupang town

I've stayed at this hotel before but before the big chain hotels were built near the airport a few years ago. I can't compare what the airport hotels are like however, It's not my style! But I see many of the larger group venues are creeping away from the central town areas and towards the airport.
Maya was a very nice little choice for this area, across the street from Pantai Timor hotel, which is now also very quiet. The hotel itself is still the same, clean, basic but with a good shower/toilet combination, good towels, sink, desk and closet, good wifi. Breakfast is a set nasi goreng plate which was fine. The desk called us a taxi to the airport on our last night which was about 20 minutes and about 85,000 rupiah. Overall fine stay, I would stay here again.

New, clean and well kept

The best cheap option in town, 10 minutus walking from the night pasar, where is possible to eat good baked fish. Friendly staff, rooms spot clean, shower, not so common in other hotels in town. Basic breakfast included.

The maya like it like that

The maya liked kupang has seen better days Neverthelless when in kupang the maya is my choice of hotels. I stay in the room as pictured and I watch a vessel go back and forth, from the window as I sip a beer not bought from the hotel but at a warung at half the price.This time I have a family room for 25000o rp with ample hot water and good wifi. The choclote bread is truly woeful buit popular with local stayers. There are good local warungs nearby.y favourite place is the end of the jetty opposite. I am stuck here at the moment waiting for calm winds so that the ferry to Sabu will sail. The new shopping cetre bimo 10 is worth avisit. Frm here go into the mountains take a jumper

Simple, Close to the Main Hub

When it comes to Kupang, let's be realistic: you're not thinking "glamour". But that doesn't mean we can't have a few of the basics, does it?
When you check into your room, make sure your airconditioning works - check the TV works (if that is important to you) - and check the linen. If it doesn't work or is not to your standard, simply inform the staff and change rooms. Btw, this is a golden rule of thumb for the entire Indonesian archipelago. This is Indonesia 101.
The curtains are modest, so if you like to sleep in - grab a room on the right hand side of the corridor, otherwise the sun will wake you. You'll also be away from the street noise.
At the Maya, the hotel staff might not fall over themselves assisting you, but they will get the job done. Floors are moped daily. Again, if you are not satisfied - inform the staff and give them the opportunity to fix it.
Breakfast is a boiled egg and a chocolate sandwich - relic from the Dutch days. Trust me, the staff will not budge on breakfast so just eat it. By the 3-4 day, you will wake up looking forward to this delicacy. Salt and pepper available on request, but the pepper is from 1985 and has turned to cardboard.
Hey - if you want somewhere cheap ($25 AUD) and close to the anchorage, if you know someone coming for Sail Indonesia and you need a place to crash while you wait for them, this is pretty much as good as it gets. Other hotels might be more modern, BUT you will have to sit in traffic MORE. Hotel Maya is a quick zip in a bemo to the Pantai Laut, and a quick stroll home from the night markets.
I will stay there again. Feels like the 1980s.
