A hidden gem in Padang

Absolutely loved this place. From the moment you arrive, the gardens and views are incredible. The pool was the perfect temperature to swim in, and the staff were so friendly and accommodating — nothing was ever a problem. They even prepared a beautiful four-course meal for us using dishes we selected from the menu, and every course was delicious.
The sunset was stunning, followed by a huge tropical rainstorm that we watched from our room — such a special experience. This place truly feels like a hidden oasis in Padang and I loved every minute of it x

Worn out Villa - hotel

As the final stop on our two-week vacation tour in Sumatra, we decided to end our trip in Padang and book Air Manis Hill Resident as the luxurious, relaxing part of the journey. We needed three rooms and were offered a price of IDR 6.5 million (USD 402) per night for all three rooms, including breakfast.
We arrived late in the evening and were welcomed by a lady who is responsible for the property. The owner does not live in Indonesia. There was not much introduction to the place, and after a short while the lady went home. We were then completely alone in the house — with no security at all.
When we woke up the next morning, we saw a beautiful, well-maintained garden, a swimming pool, and a stunning view of the ocean. Unfortunately, we also noticed how dirty the place was: old, worn-out towels; dirty bed linen; a filthy bath mat; grime in all corners; dirty power outlets, lamps, shelves — dirt everywhere. There was no hot water in the taps.
We complained directly to the owner, who apologized. Nothing much happened on the first day, but on the second day a bit of cleaning was done. The bed linen and towels were changed, and the areas we had pointed out in photos were dusted. However, all other corners were still very dirty, and there was still no hot water. We complained again, and a technician was finally brought in to repair the system, so after our third night we were able to take a hot shower.
We ended up getting a discount of about 25%, which we still felt was expensive considering what we got for the money. The owner excused it with the weather and one staff member being ill. The weather was indeed very bad, but this has nothing to do with how clean the house, towels, and bedsheets are. And without us complaining, we would still have paid full price. It is a house without security, and the staff (with very limited english) went home at 5 p.m. So when the power went out early one morning, we had to wait for it to be restored until the staff arrived around 8 a.m.
The description and photos shown on the website are certainly not up to date — I guess this is how the property looked 10 or more years ago. Still, the best we can say is this: for the price of a 5-star hotel, you only get a stunning view, a beautiful garden, and a nice pool - which you can only enjoy when it is not raining.

Because our complex is well built and located on a mountain top, this guest did not seem to notice that a huge natural disaster had unfolded a week before her arrival and continued to flood and destroy thousands of houses in Sumatra. Our staff were under serious stress. Our cook was in hospital and our guest relations manager's home was flooded up to her knees. The rain and wind was cyclonic and some of our accommodation was not cleaned to our normal standards. Also the local power company could not supply the normal voltage to our villa and our electric hot water systems were not able to deliver as much hot water as the guests wanted. The rain was constant the guests could not enjoy our pool and gardens. We gave the guests a 40% but they demanded almost 70% discount and threatened us with a bad review if we did not agree. They were angry about our generous offer and spent the next day finding anything they could to complain about. Some of the photos are not from our property and some are. The guests seem to blame us and our staff for the horrible weather! In fact when they departed, their aircraft was the last to leave Padang before the airport was closed. Our photos are up-to-date and we just finished refilling our beautiful pool just in time for their arrival... the rain intervened but that was not something we had any control over. It is unfortunate that they thought that writing this unfair and wilfully harmful review would make anything better for us or our staff.

Held hostage by the amazing view...

Killer view, nice pool BUT not worth coming for the amenities they offer. In all honesty, this was a 1-star B&B experience located at a 5-star location. Bad breakfast, burnt and no choice in offerings. OK equipped room but nothing more than the minimum, bungalow quite rickety and badly functioning shower. On the last days the housekeeping even replaced the sheets with still moist ones; and those would not dry in that climate. Did not feel comfortable expressing this to staff on-site due to language barrier and attitude. Getting a taxi to and from the location was also quite an hassle and no real alternatives were offered by staff. Payment on-site also difficult, so recommend bringing cash or leaving deposit beforehand.

Thank you for your comments and apologies for the housecleaning issues. Our head housecleaner was in hospital for your stay and clearly the other cleaning staff did not cope. There is no excuse for the breakfast being "burned" but I can assure you that the relief cook would have offered a replacement if you had asked. We also discovered that our main PLN (government power company) meter was faulty and that we were not getting 220v but mostly about half of that under load. That has been repaired by PLN.
I can assure you that our bungalow is carefully designed and built to withstand earthquake. In 2009 all out buildings survived a 7.9 quake that caused many deaths in town and the collapse of several multi story hotels. The concrete frame and stone/brick walls of the bungalow came through a very violent shake with zero damage and no cracking. The same for the glass in windows and doors. It is unfair and disingenuous to claim the building is "rickety". Our Guest Relations manager speaks good English and our staff are very disappointed in your negative comments. Our long serving housekeeper has reluctantly retired and our housekeeping is now excellent... We are sorry for your problems during your stay and have now corrected all the shortcomings you reported..... but please, "rickety" does not describe any of our building. We built everything on site with local skilled workers and our personal hands on supervision. I'm an architect and my partner is a designer. Our buildings have stood the test of time in a very challenging environment.

strongly overpriced

A lovely place, admittedly, but at an unusual price for what you get.
High on a hill with a great view over the sea (and noise that is climbing up the mountain from the beach), this is a beautiful location, but far away from the city.
You should order your food in advance and the meal comes with steamed rice and the plate that you have ordered without any frills. Also breakfast is brought down to a minimum, no yoghurt.
The room is spacious, but the bathroom is in need of some upkeep already. The amenities are sparse at such a price (Euro 150 per night).
The staff and Zariah are friendly. One cannot pay with a credit card, only cash or the horrible paypal system.
No, this was disappointing, in spite of the nice pool without internet.

Hi Pieter, Thanks for your opinion but I feel some corrections are needed. We are exactly 12 minutes from the city centre and the new coast road is often less than that. We are on a mountain top surrounded by rain-forest and that is what most of our guests want and cannot find anywhere this close to Padang. Our housekeeper/cook was in hospital during your stay and I apologise for the shortcomings at breakfast. We have a new breakfast menu (including very delicious yoghurt) so you can now advise the staff on arrival or in the morning. The staff can activate the wifi near the pool on request. You are the first guest to complain about PayPal but a bank transfer can be requested and takes a few minutes.

A great place to relax

We stayed for a few days in the bungalow. The interior of the bungalow is basic. And for the price I expected a bit more from the bathroom.
But we spent most of the time outside: next to the pool, at the terrace with stunning views and at the ‘dining terrace’ where cook Ibu Is presented us excellent food. Both Indonesian as European food was on the menu. We can recommend the fish curry and the spaghetti bolognese.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions and very happy that overall your stay was special. We are working on a new design for the bathroom and some additional furniture to make the Bungalow more comfortable and attractive. Warm regards.
