Stylish and Distinctive, but Not Without Its Compromises
The Dean Galway is certainly not a conventional hotel, and in many respects that is its greatest strength. From the moment you enter, there is a clear emphasis on design, atmosphere and personality. The interiors are bold and contemporary without feeling entirely contrived, and the hotel has a lively character that suits Galway particularly well.
The location is excellent, with the city centre within easy walking distance, while the staff we encountered were friendly, approachable and professional.
The bedrooms are stylish and cleverly presented, although space can be at something of a premium. The emphasis here is very much on design rather than traditional hotel-room practicality, and guests expecting a large, quiet and conventional four-star bedroom may find the experience somewhat different from what they had anticipated. Noise can also be noticeable depending on the location of the room.
Where The Dean performs particularly well is in its facilities. The heated outdoor pool, sauna and gym give the hotel something genuinely distinctive, while the public areas have considerably more character than those found in many comparable city hotels.
Value for money is perhaps the more difficult question. At the right rate, The Dean offers an enjoyable and memorable Galway stay. At premium prices, however, the relatively compact bedrooms and occasional compromises become harder to overlook.
Overall, this is a stylish, energetic and well-located hotel with genuine personality. It will particularly appeal to guests who value design, atmosphere and facilities over space and traditional luxury.
Overall: 8/10 — distinctive, enjoyable and very Galway, although the price needs to be right.

Extremely Disappointed
Extremely quiet. Walked into the bar which was empty and smelled of sewage. Seemed rather understaffed.
Got a snug room for one person. I could understand the aim of having a few bits of nostalgia but when the room is so small I banged my head off it several times. Totally cluttered. I don’t think people would find it enticing to sleep with a shelf full of sweets and crisps.
Wine yet no wine opener. I had proper cups but my sister’s room had paper cups for tea or coffee. Total lack of consistency. Bathroom almost as big as the sleeping area. It most definitely was not 4 star standard.
I know Galway as my mother was born outside and have friends living there.
So overpriced I actually cannot see it doing very well. It might work in other cities but it’s Galway not Tokyo. Avoid the ‘snug’ room. It’s claustrophobic. Didn’t feel cleaned properly.
I would not stay here again. Maybe I know Galway too well and probably stayed in so many hotels over the years this was just not my cup of tea.
I wish it every success, but for some chain hotels one size fits all. The Dean doesn’t.

The room is dominated by the bed.
Our bed was angled against the window and we literally had to sit at the bottom of the bed and scoot our way up.
