Ripped off again. Brilliant.
I’ll write this in three parts....
One; optimistic - we booked via booking.com and made our selection based on the beaming reviews mentioning great location, approachable owner, amazing rooms with barely describable views the hospitable owner providing a no expense spared continental breakfast.
Two; realistic. Yes, you can see the the sea. You can sit on the stained sofa on your balcony made ‘private’ with a red tarpaulin to separate you from the communal balcony. But you can’t hear it or breathe in the sea breeze as between you and the sea are the motorcycle park, the almost twenty four hour economy and hundreds of youths. Who hang around, graffiti, urinate and smoke in the covered way leading to the front door. Which leads to a kind of alleyway where people park their motorcycles. Which leads to a dank dimly lit stairwell which leads to b&b sulis. Take in the communal outdoor space; minging dirty and facing a late night bar across the narrow street. Pop into the communal chill out space, full (and I mean FULL) of old furniture and bizzare ornaments. Decide early what to prepare for breakfast - there’s cornflakes or little processed cakes in the communal galley which is fitted out with c1980’s fixtures. Now, repair to your room - if your expecting that whitewashed walls; stone floor and simplistic charm are you in for a surprise. The shower room was disgusting, cracked tiles brown stains and the toilet seat fell off. The accommodation itself is cramped and full of old cheap furniture - dirty and dimly lit (but that’s the fault of the dead flies in the light fittings). The furnishing and decor is drab and depressing. Then; let yourself out onto the balcony and - oh don’t bother. Leave. Now, and seek out an alternative.
Three; reflective. We have sourced alternative accommodation locally. This has used up pretty much all of our spending money. We have been in contact with booking.com and b&b sulis are keeping half our money. Ooh; that reminds me - when we booked the arrangement was a small deposit and pay in cash locally that was CHANGED after the the booking and before arrival and over £500 taken from my girlfriends account. So booking.com are going to get us half our money back and make a goodwill payment for the other half. Just as soon as we provide them with a bank statement detailing the amount paid, to whom, when and by who as well as having the banks name and logo on it. A scanned spot of a paper statement will be fine. Not a problem obviously as I bring my statements and photocopier/scanner on holiday with me....
There is a chance, I fear, that unscrupulous property owners are putting their most-difficult-to-rent premises on the internet and taking advantage of distance selling, suspect five star reviews and booking.com’s 50% refund policy.
I’m not saying that’s what happened here but I think there is a chance.

Fantastic Find
Ironically we had just been let down by another B & B and so were in a bit of a jam. The owner gave us a great rate which included a continental breakfast.
The room had air conditioning as well as an ensuite bathroom with toilet, bidet and shower. The room was large and made up with clean linens and towels.
The room is one of six in a shared house overlooking the old fort and the Mediterranean Sea. A great location right in the center of town and quite with the windows closed and air conditioning on otherwise some amount of street noise.
The windows are large picture windows which when open let in the sea breeze too.
The owner could not have been more helpful and kind. I highly recommend this B & B to others and by the way, the owner speaks English very well indeed. Such a lucky find for us.
We plan on returning in December for a much longer stay and are even considering relocating to Sardinia to live our days out!

Location location location
The host is very friendly and helpful. He speaks English very well. The B&B is furbished with vintage local pieces, like a grandparents nice house in town but with modern features like the very comfortable mattresses and pillows. The main attraction is the location, by the Sulis Square, in the middle of all the Algherese action.
The breakfast offered is continental with teas, coffees, fresh fruit, cured meats, wafer thin slices of cheese, cereals, butter, jams, honey, fresh bread and industrial juices and sweets.
This is what many locals like to eat in the morning.
My favourite feature is the choice of herbal teas and green teas which is very impressive selection and the largest I have ever found in a B&B.
The cleaning lady is also friendly and helpful.
Due to the strategic position it is very easy to enjoy shopping, visit the old town, get a drink, meal or wonderful gelato at few steps from your door.
The market is also close by and you can enjoy getting your favourite fresh fruits and salads, many of which are locally produced.
This b&b is also well positioned to hire a boat trip or to go to visit the many surrounding beaches at easy reach by car or public transport.
Thank you Gianluca.
