Authentic, surreal, warm and welcoming

The hosts and welcome and warmth are like the Italian grandparents you wish you had.
The location is surreal. In a great way. Through historic, medieval, windy cobblestone lanes and stairs. Like you're in another world. Then the rooms themselves are so clean and new. Modern updated bathrooms. Views of the bridge.
Full breakfast included-- eggs, hans, cheeses, fruits, breads pastries juice and coffee. But you have to go to the bar California for it, about a 4 minute walk. In the room there are coffee tea and pastries.

Historic beauty

What a stunning location! We felt like we had stepped into a fairytale as we navigated our way to the apartment. Very clean, well stocked, and super nice hostess.
Things to note:
There is no internet. This was only slightly inconvenient.
There are a few flights of stairs, so packing light is a good idea.
Breakfast is included, but that means coffee, milk, and packaged cakes/pastries supplied in the apartment. If you want more, pack something or go grab something from one of the several small food shops in town.

Rustic, historic and small town welcoming

Really nice people who welcomed us with a bowl of pasta and wine in the morning before we checked in!
The BB is in a very old historic medieval house up quite some steps. Views of the bridge. Old stone hallways. Definitely gritty, rustic, charming and quirky.

A wonderfully different experience

Set in the gorgeous little town of Dolceacqua, the apartment was very comfortable and the owner is a delightful character. She also owns the Bar California on the other side of the little bridge and it is important to know that because that is where you need to go to check in. She will then take you into the old town to get you settled in. Pack light if you are only staying a brief while. You have to go up three flights of stairs to get into the place and lugging heavy suitcases can be a trial for the older types such as myself. Also parking in the vicinity can be a challenge, so you could have a bit of walk along the cobblestone streets which are not too helpful for wheelie luggage. Mind you, the walk and the climb are well worth it. This is a wonderful place to stay and you will be made to feel very welcome at the Bar California, which is very popular with the locals and visitors alike. There is also WiFi there but not in the apartment. The value is amazing, especially given the location and you are only around 30 minutes drive from either the Italian or French Riviera spots.

Wonderful!

We stayed at La Casetta di Vale for one week during the month of July 2014 and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The apartment was clean, nicely decorated with a small balcony overlooking the tiny winding streets and courtyards of Dolceacqua. The atmosphere of a typical tiny Italian country village certainly met our expectations and the jovial conversation of the locals that floated up to our balcony only added to the ambience!
The accommodation is really in the heart of the medieval town and has lots of character.
Eating out in Dolceacqua is a delight as there are about five or six little restaurants just over the bridge and the bar California where you can sit with a glass of local wine and watch the world go by.
The pizzeria "La Rampa" has fantastic pizzas at very good value, a pizza and beer or wine costs between 7-15€.
The owners of la Casetta di Vale were very warm, welcoming and helpful and offered us a glass of their own locally produced wine when we arrived at their family-run bar "Bar California".
Dolceacqua is not far from the coast and you can be at the beach in 15-20 minutes by car.
Just one word of advice: If you are arriving in Italy through France be careful your GPS doesn't try and take you over the mountain to reach Dolceacqua as the roads are horrendous and takes over an hour from the frontier to Dolceacqua as opposed to 15 minutes. Follow the directions to Ventimiglia on the coastal road and then Dolceacqua.
We would recommend this apartment to all travelers who appreciate the charm and atmosphere of a medieval village with the comfort of a modern apartment.
