Fantastic stay at Le Grotte de la civita and Matera
A very special choice!!
A perfect accommodation where the history of the place and the respectful renovations carried out come together.
The rooms/caves are renovated and adapted to their new use with great detail, exuding authenticity without sacrificing comfort.
The candle-light dinner was spectacular, unique. Delicious local dishes cooked and served by Brunella with a lot of heart and great care.
The massage therapists Aurelia and Margarita are HIGHLY recommended.
Our guided tour of Matera with historian Alessio Leardi was VERY interesting…

Our wedding trip to Puglia was unforgettable, and we are so glad we didn’t skip visiting the Sassi di Matera. Staying at Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita made the experience even more special.
The service was impeccable — truly above and beyond in every way. They had everything we needed, and the location was perfect: just steps away from wonderful dining, breathtaking views, and the magic of Matera itself. Spectacular hardly does it justice.
The resort is incredibly unique, blending history, beauty, and comfort in such an unforgettable way. Our visit was far too short, and we only wished we could have stayed longer.

Luxurious troglodyte step.
Very smooth access. We were warmly welcomed by Pasquale, the concierge specifically dedicated to French clients, as he speaks fluently, having lived 12 years in Bordeaux. Pasquale called us during the day to coordinate our arrival time at the Nicoletti parking lot, where he was waiting for us at the entrance. He then accompanied us to the hotel in a van and showed us our suite.
Accommodation. We had reserved suite 21, probably one of the brightest because it has 2 windows in addition to the entrance door. It is very spacious with a desk area, a dressing area, and a sitting area. Like in the old days, the king-size bed is elevated to protect it from humidity: a wooden staircase with 2 steps allows access to it. A secret passage opens onto a round vaulted cellar where a bathtub reigns and onto a narrow shower room. The spartan lighting is complemented by a myriad of flickering candles intended to create a romantic atmosphere in this troglodyte setting. The suite has a private terrace with a superb view of the Murge park. However, it also overlooks a fairly busy public pedestrian path that climbs up to the cathedral and literally crosses the perimeter of the hotel, which does not own the caves but benefits from a 99-year concession. This explains that.
Catering. On the evening of our arrival, the hotel had prepared a private dinner for us in the cave of the breakfast room, prepared by the very friendly Brunella. The vegetable starters and the two pasta dishes were remarkable. On the other hand, the lamb chops were too fatty and overcooked, the dessert was mediocre, and the wines lacked character. Finally, it is unfortunate that the fireplace was not lit given the temperature. These comments should be considered in light of the hotel's luxury positioning. Nevertheless, we had an excellent time.
Breakfast is organized around two sumptuous buffets in this same room: a savory buffet (focaccia, vegetable tarts, cold cuts, and cheeses) and a sweet buffet (fruits & pastries). Once again, the absence of a restaurant in the hotel is felt: the pastries are heavy and dry, and the service is not up to par. It lacks warmth and responsiveness. The highlight of the hotel is being able to have breakfast outside, on raw wooden benches and tables on the ramparts, facing the Murges park. A morning delight.
In summary, a beautiful exceptional address in the troglodyte hotel category, a chance to sleep in a cave as thousands of peasants did with their animals for centuries, under very different hygiene conditions. One should not be claustrophobic, and it is wise to leave the candles lit at night to avoid hitting the slightly low vaults.
