Could Have Been Better

We booked the two bedroom apartment for myself and our daughter and son in law. To start with the communication was a bit difficult. Our flight was due to arrive at 12.00 pm and check in was at 15.00 pm so I messaged and emailed more than once a few days before to ask if we could either pay for early check in or at least leave our luggage. Reply came the day before departure to say would try and accommodate request. I booked a private transfer. When we arrived at the apartment the place was closed no reception and intercom not working. The taxi Italian driver was brilliant, he asked me for the contact number on the booking and managed to phone round and establish the cleaner was in the apartment and persuaded someone to allow us in. The cleaner did not speak English but tried to show us around. Day after there was a hand written note in English pushed under the door, asking for 70 euros tourist tax and to contact using WhatsApp. I did and asked where and how to pay it, no reply till next day the reply was in Italian, which we used Google to translate. It said tourist tax was now 83 euros, again I asked how to pay, no reply for another day then next day, that I was to leave cash in the apartment and provide booking document from person who booked. I sent a screen shot from Booking.com. Eventually reply came back would send invoice for payment, now back home and still waiting. I had been asked for these on first contact and had already sent them
As to the location it is NOT beach front, you have to walk about a hundred yards to the end of the narrow alley the apartment is on, then there is a view of the sea from a high cliff, a steep hill goes downward (road works at the right hand side and cars parked on the left make it narrow) you have to dodge the cars and scooters walking down. At the bottom there is a sort of junction and steps down to a subway which has a lift. you go down 6 stops to the opening onto the beach level, along another tunnel and out onto an area of asphalt across from which are at least three restaurants, which block off the beach, so you have to pay to enter and it is around 40 euros per day for four people, two umbrellas and four sunbeds. Black sand and very busy and noisy at times. The tunnels are quite shabby and the area a bit run down.
The apartment is fairly modern, clean and well maintained, two double bedrooms with small wardrobes, which had about three coat hangers in each and two drawers, so we lived mostly, out of our suitcases. Each bedroom had air con, tv, French doors with shutters , leading on to a narrow outside balcony/corridor, the bathroom has enclosed shower cubicle, toilet, bidet and washing machine and has a door leading out to the corridor/ balcony, in front of which is a small table and four chairs in quite a cramped space. The kitchen could be described as a narrow galley kitchen with short breakfast bar and four high stools, there is no living or lounging space and nowhere else to sit down. There is a small fridge freezer, dish washer, two ring hob, toaster and microwave. A very noisy expresso machine for which very bitter compressed coffee bags were provide, along with milk and sugar sachets. no kettle. The breakfast provided is just a basket of supermarket sponge things some with Nuttella fillings, large biscuity things and croissant which did not appeal to me, also little plastic pots of jam, marmalade, Nuttella and honey which had crystallised. There were only four odd glassed, one mug which had a handle, the other oddments of cups did not. There was only one teaspoon and no chopping board and I think preparing a meal other than sandwiches would have been a challenge. Church bells rings on the hour and at quarter and half past it. Quite a bit of noise at time from scooters and people walking down the alley. Someone in the apartment above shakes all the sheets and blankets over that balcony each morning so the one for the two bedroom is covered is dust and fibres and if you are sat at the table you need to cover your drinks.
Meta itself is mostly a warren of narrow streets some quite steep and uneven, we used google maps to find the shops, bars and restaurants hidden among the streets. I would describe it as urban development by the sea not very touristy used mainly by locals and in places quite run down and in need of upgrading. We used the buses as there is a stop near the beach tunnel, they are cheap and serve a wide area all the way to Sorrento and the train station which is again cheap to travel on but both are quite often very crowded and there appears to be no restrictions on number of passengers allowed to board. Taxis can be very expensive and hard to come by. We were charged 45 euros for a trip to Sant Agnello about 2km, bus 1 euro each way per person.
As for eating out, it can be very expensive and some of the food is nothing special.
