Amazing hotel. Excellent value. Beautiful roof deck restaurant and bar

Previously we had stayed at the royal continental next door but they were full so we stumbled on the excelsior. What a great score. Super friendly staff. Amazing roof top bar. Excellent breakfast. They upgraded us a a beautiful sea view room. The rooms were very romantic even though this was not a romantic vacation. Definitely five stars. Ed would very much stay here again.

This is a grand old hotel that has frankly really nice rooms and could have been excellent. The staff were dismissive and at times rude, The AC didn’t go lower than 24 which made the room unbearable, the electric sockets were broken so you couldn’t charge devices and the lights flickered on and off. We reported all to reception but they were not resolved. We took the decision to leave early and cut our holiday short. On return they denied that we had reported any problems and refused to refund the unused nights. In comparison hotels.com were brilliant and have us vouchers to the value of the missed night.

Really good location, loved being on the water (especially in the evening). It was easy to get to and from all parts of the city and felt like we had more breathing space on the bay. We had a lovely little terrace and used it every evening. The hotel staff were generally friendly. The hotel has seen better days, faded grandeur might even be generous. The bathroom was covered in mould and if we hadn’t been so tired and not noticed the first night we would have asked to move, but there were signs of the same in the corridors anyway. The room was also smaller than pictures but I think we had been moved. Bigger terrace but smaller room. We had a “special rate” which was apparently almost half price (not quite when compared). Not sure we would stay again but relative to other options the location and personal outside space overlooking the bay were really good. Would look for a deal at one of the newer hotels / more recently refurbished nearby.

The entire hotel was fabulous! The bed was cozy, the staff were excellent, the breakfast was top notch and the location along the waterfront was perfect!

The view from the hotel is outstanding.

The hotel has an excellent view of the Egg Castle facing the port of Santa Lucia. The hot tub is large and easy to use. It is also more secure at night than the old town.
