Historic hotel with good location

Fujiya in Kurokawa onsen is located near Aso mountain on a hill side. The onsen hotels are spreading over a hill and river area. It took more than two hours from Fukuoka to Fujiya. The roads in the Kurokawa is extremely narrow and some portions are one way in the busy times. Most hotels area smaller in size and have a limited number of rooms. If you are buying a pass you can visit onsens in some other hotels as well. Restaurants choice is limited.
The hotel is quite old, and you can easily see it by yourself, but it is still keeping its charm in most area. Our room was facing the corner of the bridge which over looks the river. It is busy especially in the sunset when the illumination is turned on where many people are gathering around the bridge to take pictures. Our room was not big though but with a decent size toilet and pantry. We stayed in the hotel for two days. The meals are not bad but the hotel could only serve the same meal to us on both days. It is not a big deal to us. There is a free coffee machine in the lobby only serving coffee in the morning, unfortunately not in the afternoon.

Atmospheric midrange ryokan nicely located with some rooms on concrete banked creek

Vintage wooden building short walk downhill into town from bus station. Not as secluded as soon like its sister hotel up the hill whose pleasant outdoor baths you can use. And should. Budget single room was just that but price was right. Meals served in main room. Quality was adequate but not over the top. Not much going on in the small village that I could detect so next time I think I’d splurge on a ryokan with gardens etc although again for the price this one is just fine. Atmospheric, traditional, not a big concrete building Ike some. Consider making this stop a day trip

Amazing Stay

Nothing to complain about the Ryokan. I consider Fujiya as a midscale Ryokan with smaller size in terms of rooms, and facilities. My stay was one of the most unforgettable I had in this trip as the staff was so helpful. The dinner experience was the best as the staff was dressed in traditional customs and served everything in right sequence, right pace. just like how you enjoy the 9 courses for a good french dinner.

Great ryokan at kurokawa

The location of the ryokan is great and this is a good place to explore and enjoy your stay in kurokawa. Staff are very friendly and attentive and will try their best to speak English if needed. Definitely a different kind of traditional onsen experience

The room is facing the stream, the view is good! The family hot spring is very nice, and there are open-air baths that need to be walked for 5 minutes. Go back in autumn and autumn leaves season, definitely more beautiful than this time, highly recommended!
