Nanjyoen

A beautiful and friendly ryokan right in the heart of Kurokawa Onsen

Ryokan Nanjoen is an outstanding ryokan right in the heart of Kurokawa Onsen. It seems to be a very traditional Japanese ryokan, the room was very spacious with tatami mat sitting room, very comfortable futon bedding and amazing views out over the valley. We were lucky enough to have a private onsen which was amazing - though there is no shortage of beautiful onsen options in town so be sure to allow some time to explore.
The food was a highlight, Japanese set menu with an enormous array of beautifully prepared dishes. Different meals on each night served in beautiful dining spaces. I would advise to have a very light lunch as you will not go hungry.
I'm not sure what the staff to guest ratio is but we felt like we had our own private butler. There was always someone on hand to field any questions and all friendly and welcoming. Their English was better than my Japanese so getting information was no issue at all.
Overall, I would highly recommend - and definitely would stay here again. The ryokan and the town itself are really very beautiful. Be sure to go down to the river after dark to check out the lantern display.

The hot spring inside the hotel is relatively clean and acceptable, but the hot spring open to other guests is extremely unclean! Breakfast and dinner are average. Staff are friendly.

Large hostel away from the noise: a quiet and detailed experience in South Town Hall

There are few rooms in South Town Hall, the overall atmosphere is very quiet, there will be noise of the kind of big hot springs hostels, which is suitable for people who want to relax and slowly enjoy hot springs and the environment. The service staff is also very careful, from the stay to the departure can feel properly cared for.
In the pre-walk phase, the hotel is actively contacted by email, confirming the details of accommodation, needs and food allergies and contraindications, the communication process is clear but the response is slower, it is necessary to wait patiently, this is really a good point, so that people have already established a good sense of trust and expectation.
The hotel does not have a private parking space. Public parking is available directly in front of the hotel. This time we just encountered the snow, and when we walked to the parking lot before leaving, we found that the snow on the car had been cleaned by the staff of the hotel. It is only then that we understand why it is necessary to provide a vehicle registration number when filling in information before check-in, in order to correctly identify and assist with the process.
Choose a two-night diet plan, the overall performance of the meal is satisfactory, whether the plate, taste or rhythm arrangement is in place, the portion and abundance are enough.
It is very convenient to walk to the Gulf Bridge, in the evening to enjoy the decoration of the flashlights, without rushing the time and not to worry about traffic problems, you can relax back to take photos, walk, and fully experience the night atmosphere of the hot spring in Black River.

Lovely ryokan. We didn’t take the meals, and they were served in a dining area, not in the room. But the staff informed us of the early closing hours of locals restaurants and izakaya, and they booked tables for us at both, which was very helpful.
They picked us up and dropped us off at the bus stop on arrival/departure.
The room was spacious, very clean, with a large window looking out over the forest.
I really loved their onsen which is on a balcony, looking at forest and the night sky, it was a mild temperature, not as hot as many onsens, but very nice.
The staff were very helpful and pleasant.
Onsen hopping in Kurokawa Onsen was one of the trips highlights.

Staff are very polite, especially the staff at the restaurant, it was a great experience of the Kaiseki. Room is clean, and nice with the onsen. Staff are very helpful and cheerful.
