Beefalicious Meal in Gero!
My husband and I were looking for lunch when we were attracted by the Chinese words “松园” - Shoen . It was a cosy little restaurant at a cross junction near the train station. The staff was friendly and showed us an English menu. We ordered Hida Beef to grill...and oh wow!!!...the texture of the marbled beef was out of this world...so tender and melted in our mouths. I dare say it was the best beef I ate in my entire trip. Shoen was such a gem and we were glad to have chanced upon it. Highly recommend to anyone looking for good Hida beef in Gero. Go try it!

Excellent Hida beef at Shoen
We chanced upon Shoen after the restaurant we had planned to have our lunch at was closed. What a pleasant surprise as the Hida beef served by the restaurant was excellent, and good value for money.
We grilled the well marbled beef on our own, and they literally melted in our mouth. Little English is spoken by the service staff, but they were very welcoming and provided us with an English menu. This is a small restaurant which seats around 20 people. They also operate a small ryokan at the same premises.
Overall a very satisfying meal. In fact one of the best meals of our trip to Takayama and Gero. Glad the other restaurant we planned to lunch at was closed. If not, we would not have eaten at Shoen which is very near the Gero train station.

Older, Good Value
This is an older Ryokan but the value is exceptional. It's a little difficult to explain, because there were many things in disrepair. I suppose it is because they are the things that are unimportant. The carpet was threadbare, the toilets were very old and down the hall, but it didn't matter because the tatami mats were in good repair, the shoji doors were beautiful, the room was very large, the food was delicious and the hosts were friendly. I would recommend this Ryokan to friends.

這是一家家庭式經營民宿，老闆娘出生下呂，英文不錯。在下呂站步行三分鐘便能到達，地理位置極佳。民宿衹有樓下及二樓。我們房間在二樓，要拿著行李走上長窄的木樓梯，洗手間在房間外面，女厠男厠在外邊，分別在長廊左右邊，浴室和温泉間在樓下，可以自行鎖著浴室獨自享用溫泉。温泉間開放時間是下午四點至早上九點。不過一般浸數分鐘已非常足夠。房間有兩張塌塌木，都很整潔。基本設施都齊備，但沒樽裝水提供。樓下有餐廳，晚上收七點，套餐性價比頗高。民宿對面有一大型招財貓。check out 時間為早上十時。要體驗日式民宿的生活，這𥚃是不錯的選擇。

According to the municipal ordinance, Gero City will begin collecting an accommodation tax from October 1, 2025. The tax amount is charged per person per night based on the accommodation fee: ¥100 for stays under ¥5,000 per person per night, and ¥200 for stays of ¥5,000 or more per person per night.
