Small town, surprisingly good resort with excellent food and good value
I stayed two nights at Hikone Castle Resort & Spa as I wanted to see Hikone Castle, one of only 12 Japanese castles with its original tenshu (castle keep) and one of only five castles in Japan designated as a National Treasure. The resort has an excellent location right on the outer moat of the castle and has great views of the castle from its lounge, from many room and from the large public bath. It is a short 10 min walk from JR Hikone station.
I booked a single room and it was small and compact but had what you needed. It was the other facilities of the resort that made the difference. There is a lounge with terrace that serves complimentary self serve drinks from 5-9 pm and both the lounge and the terrace look directly at Hikone castle and makes for good spots for photos with the castle. There is also a large public bath, separate for men and women, and you can sit in the hot bath and gaze on the castle. There are two separate baths in the public bath with one being a "silk" bath that has carbonated water. The baths are not fed by mineral springs and just use regular water but it is still a great experience to have a soak in a hot bath looking at the castle before dinner or before bedtime.
The unexpected highlight for me was the dining at the resort. i booked a breakfast included rate and was very impressed with the breakfast buffet. Not only was there a large variety of foods on offer, but I noted that many items changed the next day so there was something new to discover. There is a tempura station where fresh tempura is made with different vegetables each day like beets, beans, lotus root, yam and the tempura is fried in rice oil which results in a lighter and more healthy tempura. You can order a la carte one of two tencha tempura (tempura with crunchy rice soaked in matcha tea) - either the fish version or the vegetable version. There was curry made with the ground local Omi beef (one of the three super premium wagyu breeds together with Kobe beef and Matzusake beef), and interesting unexpected twists like sesame potato salad.
Because Hikone is a small town (population of only about 100,000) and it was at the height of the hot summer in July, I did not want to have to hunt for good food so I opted to order the kaiseki dinner at the hotel restaurant - Omi Dining Tachibana Sho - both nights of my stay. I ordered the Omi beef kaiseki one evening and a different non-Omi beef focused kaiseki the second evening. There were numerous courses that were beautifully presented and delicious and I thought both kaiseki were very good value for the quality of the dining experience. The attention to detail was incredible. In one cooling course of tomato balls in a tomato soup, the tomato balls were multi colors with red, orange and green as the chef had deftly cut pieces of different small tomatos and combined them to make multi color tomato balls. The staff at the restaurant were also most dedicated to the customer having a good experience. Despite speaking very little English, my server used her mobile phone to help her give me little insights into what I was eating or how it was prepared and what special ingredient was involved. Having explored the town during the day and taken a look at the main tourist shopping/dining street, I was very happy I made the choice to dine at the hotel as it was so nice not to have to go out in the heat and to look for options. I did not see anything walking around that looked like it would have delivered a better experience than the hotel restaurant.
My one little complaint is that the resort was a bit inflexible with its guest pick up and drop off experience. The website mentions a shuttle pick up service from JR Hikone Station but the pick up only takes place from 2 pm and drop off after check out is only at fixed times of 9, 10 and 11 am and required prior booking. Given the hotel is only a couple of minutes drive from JR Hikone station and, as far as I could tell, there is little traffic in Hikone in the area between the station and the resort, I thought the resort could have offered more flexible pick up and drop off arrangements as many onsen resorts in Japan would offer. I arrived at around noon in mid-July and it was very very hot weather so it was a bit uncomfortable to drag my luggage to the resort while trying to avoid the sun. There was a taxi stand at JR Hikone station but I notice quite a line of people who had got off the train waiting for taxis and there did not seem to be a continuous stream of taxis arriving at the station to pick up passengers so taxi rather than walking did not seem to be a good option.
I enjoyed my visit to Hikone as a quiet side trip from Kyoto and Osaka. Hikone does not appear to be on most foreign tourist's list so most visitors appear to be domestic Japanese tourists and made for a nice change from the crowd of Kyoto and Osaka. Hikone is very reacheable by a direct limited express train from Kyoto in less than 50 min and from Osaka in less than 90 min. Especially as I was visiting between the massive Gion Matsuri of Kyoto and the Tenjin Matsuri of Osaka, Hikone was a very nice relaxing break. Hikone Castle Resort & Spa would be a great place to stay if you are planning a visit to Hikone.

Great Value Hotel
I had stayed there once, about 15 years ago, and it was just a normal, rural hotel, more like a business hotel.
However, an acquaintance of mine told me that it had been renovated and was looking great, so when I was on a business trip to Nagoya, I dared to visit Hikone and stay there. It was a pretty good hotel.
【Room】
As it was a single use for a business trip, the view was on the city side, but there was a nice lounge for the guests only, and I fully enjoyed the view of Hikone Castle there. There was free beer and soft drinks in the lounge.
【Large public bath】
It wasn't very large, but it was a nice bath at Castle View.
【Breakfast】
There was a live kitchen and an extensive menu. It is strongly recommended to have a breakfast included plan. There are also comfortable terrace seats.
【Location】
Hikone Castle is right in front of me. It is a convenient place for sightseeing. It's only about 10 minutes' walk from the station, but if you call, they'll pick you up and drop you off anytime.
【Cospa】
It was around 12,000 yen for a single room with breakfast on weekdays. I think it's a good price.

Hikone Castle Resort & Spa
Just wow. This place was the perfect way to end a trip to Japan! The atmosphere was very pleasant and the whole experience was well worth it. Right from the get go the front desk was very professional and helpful. My room was amazing, traditional, clean and the building itself was very well set out.
From enjoying the castle view to sitting down and enjoying the complimentary beverage i was made to feel at home straight away. I really look forward to visiting Hikone again and when i do Hikone Castle Resort and Spawill be my go to! I cannot recommend this place enough. Thankyou Hikone Castle Resort & Spa!

I could not recommend this hotel enough if you intend to stay in the Hikone area. The hotel itself is surprisingly luxurious with great amenities and service. It's right outside of the Hikone castle area and you can get a great view of the castle and the surrounding areas basically at all times.
