Looking for a place to spend a night after a long walk around the city? Hotel «Minshuku Uzushio» is located in Imabari. This hotel is located in 17 km from the city center. You can take a walk and explore the neighbourhood area of the hotel. A very good initiation into traditional Japanese lodging!
On Hakatajima, one of the islands on the Shimanami Kaido cycling route, accommodation choices (at least those that can be booked online via an English language site) are limited so I was happy when I found Minshuku Uzushio on the gambo-ad.com website. Additionally, the fact that I could book it without meals included in the price was a bonus. There were no English reviews of this minshuku anywhere on the web and those translated from Japanese online were incomprehensible so I was apprehensive about our stay, having only a very vague idea about traditional accommodation but mainly for the fear of not being able to communicate with the proprietors. I should not have worried.
Practically no English is spoken at this minshuku so the basic explanations/payment were by way of gestures. I had a phrasebook with me but in the end did not need to use it. The checkin was very quick: showed our reservation, filled out a short form (name and address) and got the room key. Luckily there were no issues with our reservation or the amount to be paid (in cash, at checkout). You are not shown to the room and so have to find it yourself which is a little tricky. There are room names - naturally in Japanese - not numbers and you have to match the name on the key ring to the script written on the door,
There is also no information in English posted/provided anywhere so you have to also find out the hours for the communal showers/bath (as it is only open for a limited time) and breakfast/dinner times (if booked).
The room was basic, as you would expect, and quite old-fashioned but everything was in good order (good AC!) and clean. The room was furnished with tatami mats, low table with a kettle and macha powder to make tea), two wardrobes (big for futons and bedding and small for yukata robes and face towels), a small rack to dry your wet towels (I assume) and a picture on the wall. The walls are paper thin and you can hear your neighbours very well. The best thing about our room was a small balcony and a magnificent view of the Inland Sea and islands not far away. It was great being able to watch the port activity down below and the beautiful scenery from the room.
In a minshuku, the guest makes own bed. We used double futons to make our beds as there were extra provided. In the morning, you also fold the futons and place them in the wardrobe.
The communal showers/bath are on the second level, gender-separated. The signposting is in Japanese, the one with a blue curtain is for men, with a red, for women. The whole shower-taking thing is a bit awkward if you are not used to it. Bath towels are not provided so you have to make do with the face towels or else bring your own (difficult if you are cycling lol - we had packed our trail towels). Shower is taken seated on a plastic stool as the showerheads are very low. Three big bottles of washing stuff are provided but as it all labelled in Japanese, it is not clear which is shampoo, which is shower gel, etc.(I used small bottles from the hotel we stayed the night before). I did not use the bath which was available, just the shower. The bathroom is very small and if you are not the only one using it, it can be very (uncomfortably) close indeed.
Every floor has ladies' and gents' toilets.The toilets were very clean. Slippers have to be changed; interestingly the toilet slippers were clearly labeled "toilet" in English!
I've noticed a washing machine in a sort of utility room on our floor which guest could use. I found it strange though (minshuku being on the Shimanami cycling trail) that there was no rack to park cycles in front of the hotel - there is parking for cars, We had to lock our bikes to a lamppost.
We did not take meals due to being picky eaters but from the Japanese reviews, it would appear that the food is good at this minshuku (fish comes fresh from the tank in the hotel lobby!).
The proprietess who welcomed us into the minshuku and waved us goodbye when we left, was very friendly and nice.
Overall, we enjoyed our first experience in a traditional Japanese accommodation and would recommend it to other travellers.

海鮮料理がおいしい
伯方島にある民宿で海に面しています。ロビーに生け簀があり、新鮮な地魚が泳いでいます。ロビーからは海が見えますが、海に面した部屋は少ないので、山側の部屋になりました。セルフで布団の上げ下げが気にならない人にはコスパ良く食事が楽しめる宿です。
食事は「瀬戸の鮮魚とサザエ、鯛めしプラン」にしたので、サザエなど前菜、刺身盛り合わせ、コウの煮魚、天ぷらと鯛めしが付きました。ボリュームたっぷりで酒も飲んだので、鯛めしが全部食べられなかったのが残念でした。朝食も充実です。

横浜から指宿市へ出張。指宿市から伯方島へ出張した時に車で利用させていただきました。
綺麗かつ美味しいお料理でおかみさんも笑顔で対応してくれてゆっくり出張の疲れを癒されました。またお伺いしたいです。
