Must stay!

The rooms are quaint, clean and have beautiful views.
The service and hospitality at this hotel is unmatched. Josh and his staff go over the top to ensure their guests are happy. We felt at home and would visit again. Do not miss visiting here!

Overpriced, very rude owner, fake photos to describe rooms

This place is really overpriced for what it is. For almost $200 per night we didn't get our room cleaned once during our 5 day stay, so there was sand all over the floor and hair everywhere from the last guests.
We chose the Deluxe room because of the photos of the nice balcony - however this is actually a communal hotel space i.e. the owner is using fake photos to describe the rooms. In reality the balcony is tiny and super uncomfortable, not a nice place to sit.
The owner Josh was super rude all the way through the process. On the pickup, he preferred to make us walk in the searing heat with our massive bags for 20 minutes rather than drive for an extra minute. He was agressive and confrontational with both us and his staff - we overheard one of them begging for a day off because they are so overworked.
The hire car is totally necessary to get around, but the one they hired us was a complete heap of junk which was falling apart and barely worked - we thought it would break down on us at any second.
Great location, but find somewhere else out of Ishigaki City if you can!

Stunning setting, comfortable hotel but inflexible and potential to be so more

The Sunset Cove hotel is set in an absolutely stunning location above a deserted beach in a prime sunset location on beautiful Ishigaki island.
The hotel is small and intimate and set on beautiful grounds with a stunning beach cove. The rooms are functional but clean, and the recommended rooms fit our family well. Some rooms have amazing views over the ocean.
Service is mostly good if sometimes a bit chaotic and the food at the restaurant was very good even though the choices were often quite limited. The Yakiniku course is excellent value and a wonderful experience that everyone should enjoy once during their stay.
The hotel provides free kayaks which are fun to take out to the calm waters around.
The hotel is conveniently located with most sights and services a short drive away. There is a restaurant at another hotel next door which is also worth trying.
This being said, the hotel had some issues that reduced the enjoyment for our particular group (Might be fine for others).
There were many lost opportunities in terms of the common areas to make them accessible and appealing. There were sofas outside the restaurant perfect for an afternoon drink but the staff didn't bother putting cushions in them so it felt a bit strange. There was no bar service at the pool (even though there is a bar there, it's used for storage). Many common areas lacked the beautiful views the hotel commands with trees and foliage in the way.
There are no provisions (umbrellas, benches) for the beach which on one hand gives the beach deserted charm but on the other hand makes it less of a place to take it easy over an afternoon.
Finally, we were quite significantly inconvenienced by the inflexible schedule, with breakfast closing at 9am (Does not exactly fit the schedule of a quiet day on the beach) and dinner also closing quite early, giving limited opportunity to enjoy the glorious sunsets at the hotel. Particularly the breakfast issue bothered us as it would have been easy to leave out the limited buffet for a little bit longer.
Overall our experience at the hotel was enjoyable but we think this hotel has the potential to become absolutely fabulous.

The worst customer service ever

We booked this place on Booking. com partly because airport pick up service was offered, and we also called beforehand to confirm the availability of it. A day before our trip we received an email saying they’ll be exactly an hour late because they had to pick up other customers. It’s more than 1.5 hours after our flight had landed and we’re still waiting at the airport. Called the hotel and the owner was super rude on the phone, threatening me to cancel the booking, no apologies offered at all!

Fabulous place by the sea

Fantastic warm and welcoming staff are an essential part of Sunset Coves charm. The facilities are clean and well maintained and has everything guests need. A special kudos to Josh for being so knowledgeable about the island and catering suggestions for things to do based on different guests needs. It was a great spot for kids with access to a safe shallow beach cove and a pool. The restaurant had a variety of Western and Japanese food options and our kids were a big fan of the breakfast spread. Situated at the north end of the island, it’s perfect for people who want to truly get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A slice of the tropics!
