the hotel looks old, but it maintain really nice. the dinner and the breakfast was incredible !! we all loved it a lot , the view was nice , can see the ocean . so sad we only stay one night. the bathroom is reall6 small, if you have kid, it's hard to shower with your kid. but over all, it's a nice hotel.

Where the Jungle Meets the Sea

Utterly amazing location and staff. Friendly and kind beyond belief. Spending four nights here and hate to leave! The food is incredible, bounty of the sea. Great location for day trips (Kashiwajima Island, etc.) Both my wife's and my heart will always be here!

seen better days but I'd go back

This hotel was probably one of the "go-to" places in the 1990s during Japan's 'bubble' economy. When traveling around Japan, you will find fantastic places that were popular in the 90s but aren't any longer. This hotel seems to be one of the unfortunate ones that lost its popularity. What a gorgeous place! Location, room designs... I stayed in the room with loft and I loved it. The staff were top notch and treated me well. Very old school. The problem with this hotel is as others have said. It is run down. That adds to the charm, but there are stains and I questioned the cleanliness. I was there for pretty much one night and out early the next morning. I was so exhausted I knocked out after 10 minutes, so I can't even comment on the comfort of the bed. Would I stay there for a week? Maybe, because it's charming. I would just turn my eyes away from the little things (dust, stains...) and hope that my money would contribute to helping them fix it back up to its former glory.

Difficult hotel to review......

We stayed for one night while travelling by car around Shikoku, (it is really only accessible by car).
Large tatami room and good futons etc., balcony overlooking the sea. Should/could have been idyllic.
The meals with the half board option were excellent - sashimi, lobster, shellfish, miso, omelette etc. for the evening meal, and a good western and choice of Japanese breakfasts. Good onsen, pyjamas provided in the room.
However - the Hotel is in need of serious refurbishment - stairways have rough wooden rails due to deterioration, not design, outside seating (room and public areas) in poor condition, flooring very worn outside public areas. Very few staff doing multiple jobs and not always helpful - young man showing us to our room did not offer to help with the two cases I was carrying down stairs for example, no one came to make up the futons as in all of the other Japanese style hotels/rooms we had stayed in.
One of the pyjama jackets provided had a serious mark on it.
Musty/drainy smell from bathroom that got worse once the shower was used - did this late in the evening so just closed closed all the doors leading to it as we only stayed for one evening.
A lot of potential but run down.

Fabulous stay

The hotel looked somewhat dated & surely has seen better days. However, we loved the nostalgia & the ‘retro’ theme has bought us over completely. Front desk service was good, everything was explained clearly & carefully. We were given a HUGE room with a balcony overlooking the sea & reef. Despite looking its age, everything in the room worked very well. We made our own matcha tea & had the complimentary cookies. The hot bath was a pleasant surprise, & we pretty much had the whole place to own. Dinner & breakfast were also up to the mark. Bonito, the famous Kochi fish dish, must not be missed. Overall, it was easy to give Hotel Bellreef a 4-star, but at this price point, I chose to rate it a perfect FIVE. Kudos!
