STUDIO EN YOGA in the Setsu: wow!

Most people come to Niseko for the snow, but I would come back just for the yoga! Truly an outstanding studio with excellent teachers and a large variety of classes throughout the day. Vinyasa, hatha, yin and snow conditioning yoga are all available. Special classes include sound bath meditation and drumming. Spacious, beautiful studio inside the Setsu hotel, central location and parking across the street at the Lawson. The studio offers clean mats, bolsters, blankets and other props for use. Rates are reasonable with monthly membership option for those staying longer. Pilates reformer classes are also available. Don’t miss your chance to do yoga in the spiritual energy center of Mount Yotei!

Disappointing Experience – Overpriced and Poorly Managed

We have been coming to Niseko for the past four years and have watched prices increase year after year. Unfortunately, this season the costs have reached a level that feels completely unreasonable, especially considering the experience delivered.
Niseko remains a pleasant ski destination, but it is fair to question whether it justifies such extreme pricing. Expectations inevitably become very high when paying premium rates, and this year we were left disappointed on multiple fronts. The resort is now extremely crowded, which may be commercially successful, but on several days we spent far too much time queuing for lifts compared to the actual time spent skiing.
Regarding Setsu Niseko specifically, we stayed here previously and booked our 2026 stay one year in advance under an “early bird” rate. Despite this, our booking still ended up approximately 15% higher than the previous year because our stay coincided with Chinese New Year. This pricing logic is difficult to understand and feels excessive. For nine nights we paid over USD 20,000, which naturally creates very high expectations.
Unfortunately, the experience did not match the price.
One year before arrival we specifically requested a high-floor room. Upon check-in we were initially offered a second-floor unit. After a long and uncomfortable discussion — and after reviewing the many email exchanges between my wife and the reservations team — it became clear that there had been a miscommunication on the hotel’s side. The best alternative offered was a third-floor unit facing an unattractive rooftop. No apology or meaningful acknowledgment was provided, which was particularly disappointing given the price level.
The ski locker facilities are convenient, but the shuttle service has deteriorated compared to last year. Previously, staff assisted guests by safely storing skis and snowboards on the bus, allowing passengers to sit comfortably. This year no assistance was provided. Guests struggled to board with full equipment, and skis were placed randomly without any safety considerations. I reported this issue early during our stay, but no action was taken. For a hotel charging premium prices, this level of service is unacceptable.
The general condition of the lobby was also surprising. The carpet is visibly worn and below the standard one would expect from a hotel positioning itself at this price level.
Service quality at the Meli Melo restaurant was inconsistent. Some evening staff members appeared insufficiently trained and not properly groomed. This reflects more on management than on individual employees, but it nonetheless diminishes the overall experience.
At Afuri Ramen, prices have increased roughly 15–20% year after year. While the food is decent, the pricing has reached a level that feels excessive for a simple ramen meal.
The room itself was acceptable if price is ignored, but considering the cost it felt small for four occupants, and the view was disappointing.
Housekeeping was also inconsistent. Staff entered the room frequently and sometimes felt intrusive, yet cleaning lacked attention to detail. Again, expectations at this price point are significantly higher.
Overall, this will be our last stay at Setsu Niseko. The property is overrated, overpriced, and disappointing in several important areas. Most concerning is the absence of accountability — despite clear issues supported by conversations and documentation, no meaningful apologies or corrective actions were offered.
Niseko itself is becoming increasingly crowded and expensive, and we will likely look for alternative ski destinations in the future where the experience is better aligned with the price.

Dear Mr. David D,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed review.
As a returning guest to both Niseko and Setsu Niseko, we truly value the loyalty you have shown over the past few years.
We fully understand that when guests travel during peak periods, expectations are naturally high. It is therefore particularly disappointing to learn that your recent stay did not meet those expectations.
Please accept my sincere apologies that we fell short on this occasion.
Regarding your request for a high floor room, we noted your preference on your booking when the request was made. As mentioned, we try our best to accommodate guests' requests as much as we can, the room preference cannot be guaranteed and are always subject to room availability. I regret that we were not able to accommodate your request on this recent stay. And, I am glad that we managed to arrange an alternative room for you after you arrived.
Thank you for your valuable feedback regarding the ski shuttle service.
I am sorry to learn that our shuttle drivers were not as attentive and helpful to our guests compare to last season.
Additionally, I sincerely apologize that the room was not properly cleaned and inspected to meet our usual standard.
Your valuable feedback has been shared to relevant managers so that these concerns can be addressed directly with each staff members for the improvements. And, we will conduct necessary training. We will continue to seek ways to improve our service and overall guest experience.
Thank you also for your valuable feedback regarding the restaurants. Your feedback has been shared with each restaurant managers for their immediate review and necessary improvements.

Amazing hotel

I recently had the pleasure of staying at this truly superior hotel, & the experience exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and gracious hospitality that continued throughout our stay.
The property itself is absolutely stunning, with beautiful décor that blends elegance and comfort perfectly. Every detail felt thoughtfully designed, creating an atmosphere that was both luxurious and inviting. The common areas were clean, warm, and inviting, making it a pleasure to relax by the fire after a day out.
Our accommodation was exceptionally well-appointed, featuring a perfectly equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, which made our stay incredibly convenient and comfortable. It truly felt like a home away from home, with everything we needed readily available.
Each morning, the breakfast buffet was outstanding — a generous and beautifully presented spread with something for everyone. It was the perfect way to start the day. The service and graciousness of all staff were outstanding; every team member was attentive, professional, and sincerely eager to ensure we had a memorable stay. Special mention to Michele!
One of the absolute highlights was the private onsen, which was simply perfect. It provided a serene and rejuvenating retreat after skiing. Speaking of skiing, the ease of ski rental and lockers made the entire process seamless and stress-free. Additionally, the added shuttle service was efficient, making transportation to and from the slopes effortless.
Overall, this hotel delivers a superior experience in every sense. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for comfort, convenience, and exceptional hospitality. I look forward to returning again soon.
