Beautiful Onomichi Channel views

I stayed at the Onomichi Club Senkoji for one night in an Economy Twin room and was very happy with my stay. I would have rated this hotel (it is not a ryokan) as average were it not for some totally standout features, as follows:
- my room (on 2nd of 3 floors) was huge, easily twice the size of other Japanese hotel rooms where I have stayed
- tons of storage space with nice open shelving plus a closet
- floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall East-facing window with gorgeous views of the Onomichi channel and up over Senkoji Park
- the sink and mirror are beside the window, which initially found strange until I realized I had an incredible view of the channel while brushing my teeth ;)
- absolutely excellent service from the front desk; they arranged my taxi’s, made an excellent restaurant recommendation and repeated phoned the restaurant until they answered; they called my next hotel (their sister hotel Ryokan Nishiyama) to see if I could store my luggage there while cycling the Shimanami Kaido, etc. The front desk staff really made my stay seamless.
- beautiful rooftop bar with amazing tiered patio so everyone has a view, great drinks (see pics)
- a close walk to Senkoji Park and great place to start the temple walk (going downhill)
- very clean with wood floors
- lots of electrical outlets, and master light switches by the bed
Here are some things to be aware of of:
- not a luxury hotel - decor could use some upscaling
- no onsen, though there is a sento (communal bath) on the first floor where the view is mostly obscured. It is utilitarian, nothing special
- the bathroom in my room was comically small; not much larger than an airplane bathroom. I used the sento for bathing.
- windows are single-paned so they let in lots of heat from the sun in the morning - fortunately A/C was good, plus there’s a fan by the sink.
- costs about ¥1200-1400 to get to Onomichi Station or to the Onomichi Handori Shopping Arcade
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here thanks to the excellent service and the incredible views.

This was my favourite stay in my trip. Greeted at the entrance by a staff member whoofferex me a cokd towel and drink while they checked me in. Room was lovely. I gad difficulty with the room temperature and staff dealt eith ut whike I was at dinner. They took a photo of the remote and labelled it in English for me. The food is the highlight! It is a fixed menu full of drlightes each evening. There was miscommunication about my dietary requirements on the first night and chef made me a different course in the moment. Do rake their advice and get a taxi from station. Wonderful all round.

What a dream location and hotel (I almost don't want to share this review because it will be impossible to get a room in the future!) Nestled in the midst of a park above the town, with unbeatable views and 5-star service, this renovated hotel feels like a hip retreat experience. Getting up the steep hill requires a taxi ride or a car, but once you are there you pretty much won't want to move. First, because you are within a park where you can walk to an observatory or an art museum. Then because both the cafe and rooftop bar offer incredible drinks/views, the restaurant serves the most authentic Japanese breakfast we had anywhere, and the loungewear and onsen just encourage relaxation. We felt like we were in a ryokan in a combo of Brooklyn,NY and the Berkshires, MA in the US! Because we were there peak cherry-blossom season the views were even more gorgeous- but this spot is divine and the spacious, luminous rooms allow you to really enjoy every little bit. Stay at least 2-3 nights so you can explore the area and town as well- and be sure to reserve for dinner or breakfast before you arrive- the chef needs advance notice to create their visually stunning, delicate menu items.

I didn't want to stay here again.

I was surprised to find that there was no TV in the whole building, not just the room. I didn't see the show I was looking forward to.
There's no room guide, so I figured out what's there and where.
I don't have an internal phone, so I have to call the front desk from my cell phone when I need to.
There were only two hair dryers in the changing room of the women's public bath, and I was stuck in the queue.
